Looking into TESU BSBA General Management
#1
Just wanted to get an idea from those who have received a BSBA in Gen Management from TESU what range of classes I would still have to take besides some of the ones in the general area of study and the basics for business.

Credits - Broward Community College
AMH 2010 US History 3 Credits (semester system)
ANT2000 Intro to Anthropology -3 Credits
ENC1101 Composition 1 -3 Credits

Bus110 Principles of Management - 3 Credits
Mathematics for business and finance- 3 Credits
(Originally was going thru for their degree program but realize it may serve me better to go with TESU as I can test out more compared to Penn foster and if I decide I want to get my masters degree this will better serve me in the long run).

CLEP Test
Principles of Macroeconomics - 3 Credits

TEEX
Intro to cybersecurity:everyone - 2 credits
Intro to cybersecurity: business - 2 credits
Intro to cybersecurity: IT -2 Credits

Just wanted to see what you guys will think will apply for each categories and a general idea of what will be needed to be taken besides the area of study and business basics.

I know for sure I'll still need to take the cornerstone, capstone as well as a few others.

I know I'm going to need to take:
Business communications
Principles of finance (unless they'll count the business math for this)
business in society/international management
intro to marketing
financial accounting (probably SL accounting 1 for taking this class)
managerial accounting (Planning to take SL accounting 2 for this class)

Also recommendations for reasonable courses for the Area of study.

I will probably have to do a combination of a few I can test out but will also probably be taking financial aid to take courses as I can not afford it all out of pocket.
Thanks, Superzim

-Edit: Does TESU accept computer classes over 7 years old if so that would be awesome as they may be able to take my computer applications class from college to replace the one in the Business list.

A couple of the PF courses won't transfer:
Business Orientation isn't ACE-approved now (I assume you took it more recently than 2004)
Math for Business & Finance stopped being ACE-approved on 9/30/2012, and it definitely will not count for Principles of Finance

You need to take an Info Lit course: World Religions (SL or DSST), A&I Lit (CLEP) or Tech Writing (DSST or TECEP)

You need Statistics (ALEKS is cheapest at $20/mo)

A GE Elective - Saylor is cheapest option, any course that doesn't duplicate what you've already taken, or isn't a business course

This will get your Gen Ed done for $150

Then you need your Core Business Requirements (and I will include cheapest way to get it):
Financial Accounting - Saylor
Managerial accounting - SL or TECEP
Business Law - Saylor
Principles of Finance - DSST or PF
Principles of Marketing - Saylor
International Business/Business in Society - TECEP or SL's Business Ethics in Society
Business/Managerial Communications: Saylor
Strategic Management - TECEP

Finally, Area of Study:
Intermediate Accounting (SL)
Cost Accounting (SL)
MIS (DSST)
Org Behavior (study.com-A - with 20% off coupon)
HRM (study.com-B - 2nd study.com course)
Any MAR or FIN course (DSST, TECEP)

I show a total of $1,232 for your courses/exams if you choose the cheapest option. If you can take the 4 SL courses in a month or less, then that cost will go down as well (I estimate SL at $100/mo, and there's a $20 off coupon right now that would make them $84 each instead).

I don't know how financial aid works at all, so this is what I can come up as cheaply as possible. With these courses plus the app fee, residency waiver fee and graduation fee, the total cost is $4000. If financial aid doesn't work on the $2000 residency waiver fee, then TESU probably isn't your best bet at this point, COSC may be better.

+1, dfrecore is quick, awesome answers too...
Did you get a chance to take a look at the degreeforum wikia page and the beginners guide on the forum?
You should grab the spreadsheet template in the wikia/forum and compare to what you have completed.

You'll get an idea of what else you need to complete, you may also want to apply & get an evaluation from TESU.
From a quick glance, you need about 15 more classes to get your degree and that would be 45 credits.
I assume the majority is going to be the pro biz and AOS requirements. Compare my template with yours Smile

Again, it's best to apply and get your evaluation to find out if those courses from 7 years ago will transfer over.
I will assume it will be anything under 10 years should come over, IT and Computer Science courses differ though.
It maybe just 5 years for some schools, others, that 7 year limit maybe the max. It's $75 to find out what you need Smile

Update: For what it's worth, If I was in your shoes, I would just finish off more/most of the requirements and apply.
Generally I would advise individuals to get a solid plan drafted and follow that plan to complete the degree as intended.
But things change along the way and requirements may be modified yearly, so, you can apply when you reach the 90 credit mark.

Essentially, the AOS are the harder part to complete, that's when I would have everything with them and
ask if courses abc will match the requirements for xyz. I will have an idea of where I will get my courses and they will decide if it matches.
If rejected, I'll know what to do with their advice and recommendations from advising.

That's not too bad at all.
I should have considered TESU before Penn Foster but from what I was calculating by taking all the classes there it was only about 6k but if I can test out a majority of these classes then this is not a bad method at all.

Do you know if they'll accept 2005-2006 computer application course to replace their computers application for tesu far as a possibility.

I've got aleks statistics I plan on starting shortly.

I'll look into taking some of these through straighterline in the next month or so as I plan on applying soon and determining more of what I have left as I go along.

I appreciate your help.

I'm estimating about 48 credits I have left to go. So not too bad at all. Thanks for the quick replies I'm going to strategize which will work best and I'll reply back once I get more info back from the school .

The age of computer or other courses only applies to the AOS, and even then they normally let you have 10cr of courses over 10 years old, so no problems getting your accepted. I have tons of courses over 10 years old throughout my degree plan, only the ones in my specialization (AOS) have a 10Y mark on them. The only time the computer issue comes up is if you're doing a computer-related degree (BSBA in CIS or BSAST in IT or BA in CS or something like that). No worries for yours.

superzim Wrote:What is your opinion between the two schools?
I see that TESU gives you more business classes to take compared to the COSC but from what I am seeing besides the required cost for the cornerstone and capstone for COSC, COSC will let you use 75 credits toward general education and only have to have 45 credits in the business administration major. Only 9 credits have to be upper level courses for the major.

Both are great schools, I had a hard time deciding on the two, a few competency based degrees, or Excelsior until recently.
Excelsior a few years ago was my first choice, as it was at sometime, the cheapest of the three and had the easiest transfers into their program. (Think it was $1500 and 117 credits were transferable)

Times have changed, TESC became a univ, they had an option to have TECEPS for residency, even though that option isn't available for me, they've got a waiver for those 16 residency credits for $2 grand. The BSBA only requires 18 UL credits in AOS, the rest can be LL. Courses for equivalents are easier to find and you can take a TECEP in place of their capstone.

For COSC, the main reason I would go for them is that, they have free FEMA credits on their end, up to 27 credits usable. There is more flexibility in the amount of general education requirements (75 LL arts/sciences, etc) and 45 credits in your major area, you can take more courses that may interest you or something like getting a double concentration.

However, their UL courses are harder to find than TESU, equivalent courses from what I would use at TESU may not come in as intended. Another downer for me is that, for a portfolio (PLA) it is $400 for one course. At TESU, you can get 12 credits for that price. I would recommend COSC over TESU for anyone taking an AS every time, unless they will ladder up to a specific BA or BS, it will then depend.

Depending on the response for financial aid I will be able to get at TESU I think I"ll go with TESU as they are the cheaper option in that if I do decide to go part time with them I can do the comprehensive plan to cover the upper level courses as well as capstone and use straighter-line for as many of the general business requirements as possible. I can't afford to complete the degree completely without financial aid but I figure if I knock out a good chunk of the easier classes while financial aid and waiting for the ability to enroll. The problem with COSC that I see know is not only the cornerstone cost (3 credits instead of the one credit one that TESU requires) but also that I would have to backtrack to get some Upper level general education exams completed instead of focusing on more business courses that are easier via TESU.

Examples where COSC is harder then TESU for requirements-
Requires Straighterline Accounting I and II for financial accounting (TESU is only accounting I for financial accounting and II is managerial for TESU)
Requires Financial Management instead of Personal Finance (Personal Finance is easier course imo)
30 Upper level Credits required - Versus 18 for TESU

I think for sure I'll go with TESU.

I think for sure I'll go with TESU.

Personal Finance is not accepted by TESU for the Finance requirement, it's a Free Elective for which you have fulfilled that requirement.

The BSBA does not require 18cr of UL, only 12cr. All have to be in your AOS, so 4 UL courses there. That can easily be found for $100/course or less.

Regarding the rest of your plan as posted today, if you are already signed up with SL, then I recommend doing all 4 of the accounting courses there to do the core plus get 2 OAS courses (1 of which will be UL). And I don't see any courses that could be moved to the Gen Ed section - and since that's the easier section to fill, then it doesn't make any sense to move things out of one area to put there anyway. You can find courses at SL that will fit into there.

Good luck!
