LawShelf = Arts & Sciences ???
#1
Will Lawshelf courses count as Arts & Sciences? They have a few that are UL, and that would be an easy, cheap way to fulfill some requirements.

Depends on the school, you can check it on the site. Don't think there are many arts or science courses.

My son has taken a few and transferred them to Excelsior.  So far, Basics of Criminal Law, Search & Seizure, and White Collar crime have come in as "S" Social Science.  We didn't expect Search and Seizure to come in as Arts and Science since the equivalency guide shows it as an elective.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. How did your son do with those courses. I read that Lawshelf is open book, so I wondered how easy they found the courses to be. Are they comparable to something from Sophia?

My son is 15 so he's not overly familiar with the law as a topic, but he's able to digest the material really well.  He is really enjoying the courses.  The module videos are very reasonable in length, and the courses seem to typically have around 5 - 6 modules.  My son completes 1-2 modules a day.  So far, the classes he's taken have case studies too.  The case study videos are much longer, but he finds them fascinating and extremely helpful to see how the material presented in the modules is applied to actual events.

The way my son works through the courses is to watch the module video and answer the corresponding quiz questions (very Sophia-like in that way, but the quizzes don't count toward the grade).  After watching all modules, he watches the case studies.  Then I copy/paste the blank quizzes into word and print them.  He then goes through them as a study tool and also marks the correct answer to later use on the exam.  I also copy/paste the transcripts into one word doc so he can search it easily during the exam.  Exams are all open book.  Some of the quiz questions are used verbatim on the exam, but there are also a lot of new questions.  Many are very similar scenarios to what was discussed in the transcript.

My son plans to take the entire set of available classes from LawShelf just for fun after he graduates from Excelsior.

I will say that today he found 2 errors in the quizzes so he wrote to LawShelf to let them know about them.  In general, though, he's learning a TON and loving the classes.

This month, he will have completed 5 classes through them.

The other classes he's completed (Basics of Contract Law & Copyright Law) came in as electives.

@alsimko, just curious, would your son like to complete a few more LawShelf courses before he graduates? I would recommend doing so, this way he would get "credit" for it, even if it's not on the degree, it'll show on his transcript with the completed courses. You can have "over 120" credits on the degree transcript!

He may end up taking extra LawShelf classes for credit before graduating. He has a love of learning and though he’s planning a gap year of sorts to pursue his true passion (music), he’ll would like to get a Master’s degree too. He has a plan with timing all mapped out so it will depend on if he can fit in more on his plan or not.
