Just received Unofficial Excelsior Eval have question on total credits needed
#1
I called but due to the call volume no one could help me at this time.

This is what I received:

Unofficial Summary - Bachelor of Science Liberal Studies (BSL)

Listed below are the requirements you still need to complete:

General Education (Arts & Sciences Requirement)
21.00 semester hours at the upper level

Depth Requirements
A depth in the Arts & Sciences

A second depth in any academic area, including applied
professional/electives

AND

Applied Professional Credit or Additional Arts & Sciences
9.00 semester hours lower level in any academic area
6.00 semester hours upper level in any academic area **

Please Note: RTV*3000, ADV*3000, and PUR*3000 from University of Florida will be reviewed upon enrollment for upper level credit. Please note this will not change the number of credits you need to earn. It will only change how many of the credits will need to be upper level.

Information Literacy Requirement

So my question is do I need a total of 36 credits well I guess 37 including the Info Lit?

I already have Stats, and Intro to Psych and had planned on taking the Psych GRE and Info Lit, but it looks like that may not cut it.

And like others I can't afford to enroll until I know I can finish quickly to avoid extra fees. I already have an Associates so I know my general ed credits are taken care of. Looks like I may need a new game plan Sad

It looks to me like you already have plenty of credit, such that you do not have to worry about finishing "quickly." The only fee you need to avoid is the annual fee (I don't recall the name of it exactly--tuition, enrollment...something) so once you enroll you'll have 12 months before you have to pay again. Even if you didn't do anything with the GRE's and just took 12 tests for 36 credits--you could do that at a comfortable pace of two per month and be done in six months.

You should look at other less expensive options for the Info Lit--like a local community college or Penn Foster.

Try calling again tomorrow or sending an email. I rarely had trouble getting through via telephone and emails were usually answered same day or next day. A little bit of effort up front to get your plan finalized and blessed should result in some pretty smooth sailing. Good luck!

Can someone translate this for me???? How many credits do I need?

Listed below are the requirements you still need to complete:

General Education (Arts & Sciences Requirement)
15.00 semester hours at the lower level
13.00 semester hours at the upper level

Distribution Requirements
3.00 in Natural Science/Math
or
3.00 in Social Science/History

Written English Requirement
3.00 semester hours in Written English

There are several ways to satisfy the Written English requirement. You may demonstrate competency in expository writing by successfully completing the Excelsior College course "English Composition" (ENG 101), the Excelsior College course "Writing for Professionals" (ENG 201), the Excelsior College "English Composition" examination or an approved course from the regionally accredited college of your choice. You must earn a minimum of three semester hours and a grade of "C" or better is required. Please visit http://www.excelsior.edu for more information on these options.

Quantitative Requirement
All baccalaureate degree students are required to take a course (equal to at least 2 semester hours or 3 quarter hours) in quantitative reasoning. You may satisfy this requirement by taking a college level course or examination such as college algebra, trigonometry, or statistics.

Depth Requirements

A second depth in any academic area, including applied
professional/electives

Each depth consists of at least 12 semester hours in one specific
discipline, including 3 hours at the upper level.

Applied Professional Credits or Additional Arts & Sciences
51.00 semester hours lower level in any academic area
9.00 semester hours upper level in any academic area

Information Literacy Requirement

INL*102 INFORMATION LITERACY

Thanks barcotta.

I did email them as well but haven't heard anything back yet.

I do have a lot of credits, in fact I have an additional AS (Paralegal/Legal Assistant) they didn't include - I guess because it's all Lower Level as well. I really was hoping for more CLEP and DANTES options than EXE tests as that doesn't really save me $$. I don't even care what I get a degree in at this point, provided it's a subject I can at least understandSmile

And by finishing quickly I have to include cost meaning I can't afford 12 EXE exams in 6 months, at least at present.

I don't quite understand -- are you still planning on taking the GRE Psychology or not? If you do, and you score above the 80th percentile, that will get you most of the way there. I don't see why you'd have to take a bunch of ECEs.

Gary, I don't understand either Big Grin

I already have a lot of LL credits (including Intro to Pysch, Sociology, Marriage and Family and Stats). So I'm thinking even if I took the Psych GRE the most I can get out of it is 18 useable credits at UL.

I know that according to the BS requirements I need a major which is 30-33 credits and one depth or two depths. A depth is considered 12 credits with at least 3 UL.

I don't know how they've distributed my existing credits.

So trying to feel my way through this I could perhaps still take the Psych GRE and knock out the major. And 18 UL out of the needed 27.

So I'd need 9 UL and 9 LL plus their Intro to Literacy course. It also looks like I need to distribute them so that I'm getting an additional 3 credits in UL Arts & Science and the rest in Applied Sciences (which can hopefully be my other depth).

Am I getting any warmer?

OK, that makes more sense now. But don't forget about those Florida credits, that still might end up being upper level for you. At this point, you know more about them than Excelsior does -- so what do you think? Are they upper level? Assuming they're three credits each, that could be as many as nine more upper level credits. What can you tell us about those courses?

Earned A's, Junior level 3000 courses from the University of FL can't figure out the problem there. They are Advertising, Public Relations and Telecommunications. Not sure if that would help with with Applied?

Heck, it seems it would be easier to skip the major and just do two depths at this point.

Excelsior is not saying there's a problem with those courses. They're just saying they haven't evaluated them yet, and they won't do it until you enroll. If you know that they are indeed junior-level courses, then you have every reason to expect you will receive upper level credit for them. So if they are three credits each (are they?) then that reduces your upper level gap to eighteen, which the GRE would cover. The only issue would be if they consider all nine of those to be Applied Professional, which would still leave you three UL credits short in Arts and Sciences. But that gap would be easy to cover with a DSST.

If I were in your shoes, I would definitely be focusing on that GRE Psychology. Make sure you get the max credits there, and everything else will fall into place. You can probably even cobble together a second depth from credits you've already earned. The GRE might duplicate your Intro to Psych, but I don't think it will duplicate your Statistics. Are there other duplication issues you're concerned about?
