Suppose you had asked for a glove, just a single glove. Since I am right handed, I would have handed you a right handed glove. Suppose you had responded with "I'm left handed, I need a left handed glove". With that information, people would know to offer a left handed glove. Or people who don't have left handed gloves would know not to offer anything. What a word, term, or phrase means to one person may be different from what it means to someone else. Part of discussion is going back and forth so that people can clarify exactly what they are trying to accomplish.
