Testing out of a degree from TESC
#1
Hello,

I have figured out how to test or take Straighterline or ALEKS courses for all of the classes of my degree from TESC (not done yet, but almost all planned out). However, I read on another post about someone wanting to take one class from TESC to obtain a GPA. Is that something everyone needs to do? I'm planning to do an AS in Business Administration from TESC, then transfer to a four-year university for a Music degree. But I've also taken a couple of music classes from two other colleges, and I got good grades on them. So those will be a part of what I transfer to the four-year university along with my Associates. So do I need to save one class to take from TESC, or can I just test out of everything?

Thank you for your advice.

You don't NEED to take a course (in your situation) or get a GPA.
To get a GPA, you do need a course.
But since you said you'll be transferring to another 4 year college, normally a GPA won't be assigned (depending on that college's transfer policy).

So unless you want a GPA on your AS, you don't need to take a course.

The tricky part is preparing for the transfer between colleges. Does the 4-year college have an "articulation agreement" with TESC to accept your ASBA in full? Or does the 4-year college have a generous CLEP acceptance policy that matches well with your ASBA tests and your planned music degree? Just realize that the Big 3 are so flexible and generous, it can be hard to switch back to traditional programs without losing some/most credits, so plan ahead.

I did contact the college to see if they accept an Associate's Degree from Thomas Edison, and the person I talked to said that yes, they will accept the Associate's from Thomas Edison, and that it would be considered complete. Does that sound like what you were talking about? Or do I need to clarify something else?

As long as when they say "accept" that means that all the credits in that Associate's Degree will be able to be used in your Bachelor's then you should be set.

That's hard to say. Let me give you an example where I did not ask the right question.

Before I transferred to EC, I started working toward a bachelor's degree at a university. I asked if a course in Spanish taken at another college would transfer. I was told yes. Well, this was true, but I did not realize until after I took the course that Spanish would not count toward the humanities requirement for the degree I wanted.

The same university seems to have a very generous CLEP policy; however, if I tried to transfer back to them now, I would be a freshman again.

I know that it is really easy to transfer to the Big 3, but transferring out (or even between traditional programs) can be more difficult without careful planning.

Another example that I have heard is "yes, we will accept your art class, but we want you to take a music class instead." In my book, that is not really accepting the art class because the new college has a different requirement.

Make sure you understand the policies at the university and in regard to your music major.

For your sake, I hope you got the correct answer. It doesn't hurt to double-check. Will you only need 60 more credits to complete the music degree?

If I decided to take one class from TESC just to get a GPA, is there one that you would recommend with my business degree? Preferably a quick and inexpensive one.

You said that your college will accept an associate's degree from Thomas Edison but did you specify that it is an AS and not an AA? They usually do not transfer the same.

Thank you for the clarification. I am going to call the college to see what their policy for the ASBA is.
