It's been almost impossible for me to take proctored test lately since I have a Mac
#1
I have 2 computers. A personal MacBook and a Dell Laptop for Work. I've always used my MacBook for all my studying and test taking, but I haven't been able to use it anywhere for proctored finals for the past month or so. RPNow (used by study.com and onlinedegree.com) and ProctorU (used by Saylor.org) apparently still aren't supporting MacOS Mojave (or maybe just the latest version of it, I can't be sure). My MacBook updates automatically, so I didn't realize what was happening at first, but the RPNow browser just has a plugin failure and ProctorU just can't seem to get connected. I've had to use my work laptop since it has windows, but for that I have to remove the anti-virus and several other security programs just to get the stuff to work. It's a work laptop so it's supposed to be locked down.

These companies really need to support the current OS if they're going to keep advertising that they work on Macs. My last 2 proctorU exams took 2 hours to get working because I didn't realize the issue was my Mac, and then had to switch computers. I had a similar issue with OnlineDegree.com using rpnow and just had the same problem with study.com. My account's now showing up that I used one of my 2 exams for the month but I couldn't take it and now have to go through the headache of getting it all sorted out, if I even can. I've taken so many already on my Mac that I took it for granted that it was still going to work, and I'm just pricing together that it's all because my OS is up to date. This is partially on me, I'm sure I missed some fine print somewhere, but this is pretty frustrating and I'm sure others have already ran into it or will soon.

Have you tried reaching out to the rpnow and proctoru tech support folks directly on this? Sounds like something they'd be aware of and might have a workaround for if it's based on the OS update.

I use a MacBook too, and I have only minor problems with RP Now on two occasions. This was because I had not logged out of other users. I have created a separate user for only online proctored tests. I have not had any problems with Proctor U thus far.

Yes. Protoru doesn’t seem to know that there’s any issue. I’ve reached out to their support multiple times. Rpnow confirmed there’s a known issue. Here’s what rpnow said when I reached out to them:

“TechRep4 (23:32:59):
the reason why it's giving a flash plug-in error is that the latest os version of mac doesn't support Flash Player.
TechRep4 (23:33:34):
You can use different PC or contact study.com for advice
Cameron (23:33:37):
Ok, I checked the requirements on the website and thought it would work, but I guess it's using the old version. Can I use the new version of rpnow?
TechRep4 (23:34:26):
Still it won't work, developers still working on this matter, its compatibility issue
Cameron (23:35:14):
So no version of RPNow works with the current version of MacOS?
TechRep4 (23:35:32):
Higher support team advice for the mean time is to use different PC
TechRep4 (23:35:39):
None as of the moment
TechRep4 (23:35:45):
for Mojave”

So if you update your Mac, it won’t work anymore. And from study.com, I got the usual response:

“Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Study.com.
In order to ensure you receive the best possible answer, I have escalated this request to my team. You should have an answer soon.”

I’ve gotten this before and never got a followup, so I’m not sure if I’ll actually hear anything else from study.com. But rpnow has confirmed it doesn’t work with the current Mac OS, so I’d recommend not updating for anyone that hasn’t already.

Yes, I’ve used rpnow many times without issue. It’s only recently that it’s not working. And their support confirmed it is not compatible with the current version of MacOS. so don’t update to Mojave if you haven’t already.

Yesterday, I took a study.com final exam (RPnow), with my old macbook pro updated with the latest updates, just fine. It required the most recent flash plugin though.

EDIT: "Yes, I’ve used rpnow many times without issue. It’s only recently that it’s not working. And their support confirmed it is not compatible with the current version of MacOS. so don’t update to Mojave if you haven’t already."

Just seen this. Weird, it worked for me yesterday.

Yeah, I can't believe I'm the only one having this issue. Especially since I have written confirmation from rpnow that it doesn't work with Mojave.

Bah, so it sounds less like it is an issue with MacOS Mojave and more of an issue that RPnow is still using flash, which was announced as depreciated like 2 years ago. This doesn't surprise me. They've had plenty of time to move to some other technology but haven't done so. Now they're starting to have issues which will continue to get worse given that most browsers no longer support flash, or will no longer support it soon.

It sounds like they need to rearchitect their app and use some other multi-platform technology to do it. Maybe HTML5 or Java. Or do what ProctorU did and build a Chrome plugin that replaces the need for flash (their AutoProctor plugin).

As an update, I dug up my wife's old MacBook and was able to take it on that. My MacBook has 10.14 and it's still not working for that version of MacOS, but at least I have a workaround for now.
