Is CLEP right for me?
#11
phoenixuser Wrote:The more I read, I swear the more confused I get! So, Peterson's just lets you take practice tests? REA offers reading materials with practice tests included in the book and Pass This Class does the same? I understand IC now. I could use it as a supplement to my reading material. What is the code for @ Peterson's? Do I understand this correctly? And, the practice CLEP tests everyone is talking about... are those in the books or on some different website?
Thanks so much!

Petersons are practice tests. Your local library may have a code you can use to access those tests for free. Our military can access them for free--also with a code. If neither of those options works--you can pay $19.95 per practice test. From my perspective--any practice test is better than none. I've seen a few Pass Your Class guides but I don't recall a practice test. I never used the REA materials. The practice CLEP tests from the College Board are in the big, blue book. You could use IC to supplement your reading material if you have acquired some Sociology reading material--or you could just learn the flashcards, take a practice test or two and go try the exam.

Should we get the 2009 CLEP book (exams on every CLEP test) or is the 2008 edition still ok?

I have an older version of the CLEP guide and a 2008 version, I do not think there is really much if any difference. If the price is about the same get the newer one, but if you can get 2008 much cheaper it will be fine.

Phoenixuser If you are happy with UofP that is fine, many of us here just feel it is a much costlier alternative then the big 3. Use IC as a study tool. I will PM you about other tools. Just from reading your post I would say you are NOT dumb. You may be uninformed about history or current events, but don't sell yourself short. You are smart enough to look into bettering yourself and all of this can be extremely overwhelming at first. Never hesitate to ask a question, all of us here have had to ask questions in the past. The worst that you will get is someone telling you to search this sight for a previous answer.Good Luck with your studies. I have 3 special nieces and nephews in SC and I would love to have them get a teacher as motivated as you.
