Because of the publish or parish culture and with the competitiveness of landing tenure-track positions, there's a lot of fake data in scientific articles.

I suppose you could blame the system for an individual's dishonesty but it's a little bit like saying there would be no criminals if there were no laws.  There are plenty of honest researchers and so it's really not so simple a matter as blaming "publish or perish."

No, it's not. That analogy doesn't fit here. Of course, he's solely responsible for lying. I'm just mentioning the motivation for lying. This is analogous to someone stealing because they have no money. Did they break the law? Yeah, but are we too lazy to try to understand why people do certain things? That's the whole purpose of the social sciences.

As far as I can see, this man was not some poor academic struggling to survive in a some hostile "publish or perish" environment.  He was a "behavioral science superstar" who wanted to continue to be a behavioral science superstar.
Pure ego.

Understood, but I wonder how long he's been lying considering that the article in question is from 2012. Or, it could be that's the only time he lied - don't know. I remember an article a few years ago on chemistry and other science papers using fake data in large numbers. Students are citing these sources, and government, scientific, and health organizations are making decisions based on these papers.

In regards to that paper, there were four other people involved. Interestingly, this was a replication study and was used to discredit someone else's work. The famous study claiming that half of psychology studies could be replicated comes to mind. Now, you have to worry if replication studies are fabricated, but then again, replication studies can be used to help find the fakes.

...replication studies can be used to help find the fakes.

It would certainly be good to find the fakes.  I'm afraid that it's a problem that will likely take decades to sort out.  I'm not involved in academic research in any way but I'm not sure if anything new or different is being done in research circles to eliminate this problem.
