Good morning, itâs been two months since my last CLEP exam.
I'm in a funk! Trying to get through my CLEP College Composition studies. Using the REA guide, I can tell I was struggling a little in each area. Knowing this I took a break. This week I decided to startup again. However, now I'm wondering if the SL English Composition I course would be a better option for me? So, I ask anyone here who may have taken this course his or her thoughts. Would I benefit and be better off taking this course?
TL;DR - Would SL English Composition I be a better choice for me or should I just find more sources to study for the CLEP College Composition exam?

In my opinion, I would say that really depends on if COSC grants 3 or 6 credits for the English Comp CLEP. I took the Eng Comp Clep over 10 years ago as a freshman, didn't study, but did pass. To me, I think it would be less work in the long run to take the CLEP, especially if COSC will grant you 6 credits for it.

Methinks the TECEP ENC101 is the best of them all. SL English Composition requires answering multiple choice questions and writing essay/research papers. I took the TECEP English Composition 1 and 2 recently and I can tell you that, combined, both TECEPs (ENC 101 and 102) are not that difficult and do not require much writing as SL Eng Composition 1 alone. Someone else may have a different opinion, but this is mine.

Maybe, I need to get my hands on some ENG101 material to get me started on the right foot this time around. Then continue with the REA English Comp CLEP book. Then maybe I wont feel like such an idiot. banghead
Saharapost, thanks for the info on TECEP ENC101. I'll keep that in mind.

Wouldn't taking the two TECEP English exams be more expensive though than taking a single CLEP? I guess it depends how worried you are, but I'd think one exam that is cheaper and grants 6 credits would be the way to go, unless there is major concern of not being able to pass it.

You are probably right about CLEP and its utility since the candidate gets 6 credits and for less cost, however, for someone like me who couldn't CLEP because I stay outside areas where there are test centers, TECEP ENC 101 and 102 are the best bet. Compared to SL Eng Comp, TECEP ENC are easier.

If someone is doing the per credit option at TESC, then I would recommend they do the TECEPs rather then the CLEP, since this cuts out two classes ($1500 at the military rate), instead of one $100 CLEP and two classes for the residency. My wife needed English Comp II, and I convinced her to do the TECEP for residency purposes.
As far as COSC, I would think the CLEP exam is the best bet. I don't think this exam was all that difficult and it is 6 credits with minimum studying, and only two essays to write in one day. As opposed to taking SL courses in which you have to do full papers.
My final thought, the two English Comp courses are normally two courses you take in the first two semesters to set you up and prepare you for college level writing/research. Because of this, if the student needs the coursework to improve, then I believe they should take the courses.

I will continue studying for the College Composition CLEP. Instead of trying to get another CLEP out of the way, and moving on to the next, I’ll take some more time preparing for this exam.
Thanks

Hello,
In going through old school files I stumbled upon quite a few subject guides. They are older versions but may be of some use:
CLEP Official Study Guide English Composition (2006)
CLEP Official Study Guide Freshman College Composition (2006)
Pass Your Class English Composition (2006)
Pass Your Class Freshman College Composition (2006)
Petersons CLEP Success Guide (2005)
I only had time to quickly browse through one, the Petersons CLEP Success Guide. It has a nice comprehensive section on the english composition exam (pp 5-100). Including three practice tests with answers/explanations, and guidance in essay writing with samples.
If interested, send me a PM with your email.

If you haven't already, go to your local library and grab a copy of a recent official CLEP study guide (the one with all the exams in it). Inside, there is a practice exam that is spot in comparison to the real exam. More importantly, it gives examples of written essays and the score that would be received. When I did my exam, I copied the formating pretty much exactly like the example for the high scoring essay. I don't know how well that worked, but it worked well enough for me to get a good passing score.
