In-Person vs. Online vs. Virtual Courses
#21
Asynchronous online for me, all the way. I'm too spoiled watching those credits roll up like dollars on a gas pump to ever go back to sitting in a classroom.

Wink
Let me guess, an online college, or a bunch of testing?
I feel you in a sense. I'm too comfortable not having to deal with people to go to in-person classes. Here's to hoping my luck lasts long enough.

You can get a degree online from plenty of schools that are B&M - not strictly online like WGU or U of P or Capella. UMPI is a B&M school. SNHU - mostly online, but not all. There are lots of schools mentioned on this forum aside from the big names.

Never again for on-campus. I don't want to pay for parking, and I don't want to lose several hours a week driving to the campus and back.

My kid is going to take some classes at the local CC this fall, and 2 of them (in his major) are on-campus. It's only 1 course each 8-week term, 2 nights a week, and I think he's actually looking forward to not having everything online. A mix is about right for him. 3 classes online, 2 on campus.

It will also give him some access to a professor, and if the prof is any good, my kid will definitely be looking to gain some insight and possibly even get a LOR, and an internship. Some things are easier done in person.

I've earned three degrees sitting in a classroom.  It's what I'm used to and it seems to be the best for me re really learning the best.  However, it's really not practical for me now and if I had to do it that way then it wouldn't happen at all because I don't have the time/flexibility.  Asynchronous, online is the only way for me now.

The only advantage I see to the butt-in-seat thing is being able to socialize and network. That's not really learning though. I literally just proposed to my classmates the idea of playing an online entrepreneurship board game because I miss the socializing. However I don't miss having to go in and set in a class when the weather is bad out, I'm busy, or do not feel well. From that perspective, I'll opt for asynchronous learning and supplement with any opportunities I find to socialize with others outside class.

I prefer virtual. How my classes are currently, I have anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of pre-recorded lectures to watch Monday through Friday. On Saturday mornings, we have live class via Zoom and it is incredible. The discussion that is had whether it be over a case study or whether it be over some machine learning, is phenomenal and something that one could not have were the courses entirely asynchronous.

My MBA was entirely asynchronous and I doubt I would ever do a completely asynchronous program again. Then again, when I finish in May 2023, I will be done with earning degrees. ?

I will be done with earning degrees. ? <= Of course not, Dr. ThatBankDude PhD

I have been offered in person classes for this term, but I´m not accepting them, and I´m just taking online classes.
Since the payment is low and the transportation methods are terrible, the only way for me to make teaching a good job, is by teaching remotely.

That way I´m also able to teach at many different schools, that are far from each other, and some are not even in my city.

I have only participated in them with a specific professor in grad school because I felt like I got a lot out of what she talks about in the calls. They're very interactive with her. In my experience, most professors who hold Zoom meetings literally read a PowerPoint to you. They're not interactive. They're boring and don't go beyond the reading in the text. These I watch after they're recorded so I can skip ahead and not watch an hour long video where I learn nothing.

Butts in seats classes on a college campus? I'm not 20 so I don't have time for that. After completing 8 courses in 8 weeks, there's no way I could sit through 15 week long semesters and not be bored out of my mind.

That last part....so true !
