ITT Technical Institute closes all campuses

CGaboury Wrote:Just curious what the general consensus is around here. Do you think this will have any negatice effects on schools such as the big 3? Do you think that once these for profit schools are eliminated, sights will be turned on Online institutions?

The issue here isn't that the education was online (or even necessarily poor), it's that the institutions were predatory. It'd be hard to make the case that the Big 3 or non-profits in general have this issue.

I think ITT's problem was letting in so many students destined to fail. I suspect they did exactly what the Department of Education wanted - providing education otherwise unavailable to marginally qualified people. As these people were failing to complete, you cannot say they were a degree mill. Aggressive in promotion - sure, but these weren't kindergarten kids. You can't protect everyone from the magic beans nor should you spend a lot of effort in trying.

(note to subsequent poster - I changed it to "cannot say they were a degree mill" as I had originally intended - sorry)

To my way of thinking degree mill means handing out degrees that aren't earned. They weren't doing that.

That's some amazingly poor due diligence, if you're being serious.
