IT Degree options. TESC BSBA in Computer Information Systems vs. ?
#1
I've been lurking this forum for 6 months or so and have decided to finish my degree though distance learning. I've been attending a B&M Community College for nearly 4 years while working full time, and it's just too slow and limiting.

I'm looking for a Bachelors of any kind related to IT. TESC's BSBA in CIS seems like the right avenue for the credits I've amassed in CC so far, but I recently read that my IT related courses may not count towards TESC's UL degree courses. I have a couple questions and I'd be grateful if someone could clear a few things up.

Will my CC IT courses transfer to TESC (or elsewhere?)
Can I have my Transcript evaluated prior to applying for enrollment?

If most of my credits will transfer I plan on doing TESC per credit tuition plan and enrolling as soon as possible. Thank you!

Assuming that your the CC is regionally accredited, your courses will transfer almost anywhere. However, they will be LL credits almost everywhere, including TESC and the other two of the Big 3. TESC requires 12 UL credits in the 18-credit BSBA specialization. That means that only 6 of your credits can count toward the CIS specialization. Your CSCI 101 course would likely end up in the business core. The rest of your IT credits may or may not count as business electives. They can always count as free electives, but there are only 6 credits of those for the BSBA programs. They may or may not count as gen ed credits.

You might also want to take a look at TESC's BSAST in IT and BSAST in Technical Studies. Those require 12 UL credits, but 6 of them are satisfied by the required Current Trends and Application course that has to be taken at TESC and Project Management which can be taken for $300 with Sophia Learning. Those degrees will give you more room to use your LL IT courses.

TESC will give you two evaluations before enrollment after you apply. I think the application fee is still $75.

Excellent information, thank you. You (and others) have been a major help in all my research on this topic! Great work, it's much appreciated.

I think I'll proceed with my application and evaluation for both the BSBA CIS and BSAST IT and see where everything stands. Thanks again!

Do you have any IT Certifications? You may get some UL credits for them.

The Microsoft certs that are current for ACE credit are LL only. It won't really help out for this degree. The last ones expired in Jan 14. I passed mine 14 days before expiration.

Interesting. I was going to put off my CCNA until after graduation, but perhaps not.

I also have several free MS exam vouchers. They expire at this year's end, so I might as well focus on those now and see if they get me anywhere. Thanks!

Edit: nevermind! Looks like the MS certs are LL only. Thanks for the info, stretcharmy.

You can always look here ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training | Find a Course or Exam to see if what you have counts. If you did pass the cert in the active timeframe it still counts. You just cant pass it after the timeframe.

Thanks for the link! Looks like two of my free vouchers are worth 2 LL credits each (70-346 and 70-347) and the other two are not listed (70-533 and 71-532).

Can't beat free credits (assuming I can use them!). Thanks again.

maybe free electives. Not sure what the rules are on those and your degree area. You might not be able to use them as free since they match the area. SANATONE will know.

Anything can be used in free electives. TESC is not really generous with giving credits for IT certs unless there is ACE approval. I don't know if they still do, but they used to give credits for COMPTIA certs. However, those were 2 LL credits each with a CAP prefix, and they were not allowed in the area of study for computer science degrees. I think they also weren't allowed for the IT and CIS degrees. I believe they did count toward the computer studies associate's, which is more flexible.
