I guess I'm the new guy...
#1
I've been doing some research on this for the past couple of days. I've been reading all I can and trying to figure out my best course of action. I've whittled all this information down to a BSBA from TESU as my end goal. I'm a 33 year old single dad. I have a full time job as a software engineer. My motivations aren't really for career growth, I think I do incredibly well for myself considering I don't (yet) have a degree. Essentially, I'm trying to right the wrongs of my 15 year younger self.

Since I'm just starting this, here's where I am at;

I have two classes I took at a CC about 15 years ago I can transfer in. ( I'm hoping)
-Introduction to Computer Information Systems
-French I

Last evening while making dinner I decided to check out the Ethics class offered by The Institute. Surprisingly, I passed it first try with a 72%. ( Which i was shocked by, since I didn't read a single piece of literature from them) I promptly signed up for an ACE account and requested it be sent over. This has really motivated me to keep going. As silly as that sounds, that one freebie really made me want to continue.

I do have a couple of questions though...
1)How can I determine if my two CC credits are going to be useful for anything?
2) Where is everyone finding information regarding the correlation between classes taken online vs classes at TESU? By this I mean, how are we certain a class taken at something like SL is going to fulfill the requirement at TESU?

Hi new guy, I'm also the new guy - welcome Smile

Glad you could join us for the journey to a degree.

Those classes would definitely transfer - although I think there is a rule about 10+ year old classes, here I found it from TESU:

"In the degree programs listed below, if professional credits are more than 10 years old, a Demonstration of Currency (DOC) is required:

Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology (BSAST)
Associate in Science in Applied Science and Technology (ASAST)"

I literally just took the Ethics test as well, got a 76% choosing the most Ethical questions(I did have a ethics philosophy class and some business ethics experience prior however). Congrats!

I think most people find out from other people here in the forum and if not, they contact their college/university to see if it meets their requirements.

We all sort of have a spreadsheet where we keep all our classes and mark the appropriately(Done, planned, needs to be done) and from which source E.g. American Government (study.com /CLEP/Straighterline).

Maybe Dfrecore will come around and make a spreadsheet for ya :hurray:

TESU approved all my engineering courses from a 4yr, that were over 10 years old, without any kind of prompting on my part, or additional hoops, for a BSAST.

1) If nothing else, they'll fill up elective slots. The Intro to CIS should slot into the Computer requirement in the business core.
2) I used 3 "official" resources: ACE Course Search, Alternative Credit Project, Open Course Option. EDIT: There's also DSST (formerly DANTES) and CLEP - College-Level Exam Program

Your classes will definitely come in. For Gen Ed, Free Electives, and even some core areas, there is no time limit on courses - you can bring in courses from 50 years ago if that's when you took them.

For the BSBA, there's a limit on the number of older courses that you can use in your Area of Study (AOS). There is a 10cr limit on 10-year old or older courses. So if there were 6 15-yo courses that you wanted to bring in that were in your AOS, they would only accept 3 of them, the other 3 would be able to go into Gen Ed or Free Electives or somewhere else.

There are some published course equivalency forms for some of the companies (CLEP, DSST, SL, Study.com) and then for the rest, we on this forum know because people come on here and tell us. I have a very long spreadsheet with course equivalencies from TESU on it. I update it regularly, when I find out a new course equivalency, or if there's a change.

French I will come in as FRE-101 and will fit into your Knowledge of Human Cultures area, and Intro to Computer Info Sys will come in as either CIS-101 or COS-101 and will fit into your Core area, where a computer course is required.

If you tell me how you want to take your courses (Saylor, SL, CLEP, DSST, Study.com, etc), I can attach a spreadsheet showing where to take all of the courses you need to take.

Wow, thanks for all the help here. I've rare to find a forum, regardless of topic< with such helpful people.

Honestly I'm interested in taking as many classes online as possible. The more I can take unproctored the better, since I tend to multitask during my work day and I do a lot online late in the evening.

So far I have my French I, Intro to Computer Information Systems, The Institute Ethics course, and I just finished up Intermediate Algebra today while at work. ( That was a lot harder than I anticipated.)

'So I just got notified that my Ethics class as reviewed. When I went to ACE to look at it, under Credit Type it says "Course". Is this normal? I was assuming there was a way of tracking the number of credits i had already accumulated.

I just requested they look at my ALEKs score from today. Once thats on there I'll do the next math class.

I have Decided, I'm going to get the BSBA from TESU.

Avenues for credits will be the following:

Transfer of CC classes (Intro To Computer Information Systems, French I)
ALEKS (Completed Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra already)
The Institute (Completed Ethics Already)
Saylor Academy (nothing completed yet, but this seems the fastest and cheapest method)
TEEX ( Still yet to take any classes)
StraighterLine ( Nothing Started yet)

Are there any other methods I should consider? Any course work that appears to not be available with these methods? I'd really like to get your thoughts on a plan of attack as you seem to be the master of degree planning around here.

Yes, that's normal. Manual tracking is the best way to go, via spreadsheet or other means.

Awesome. Which concentration? I assume General Management?

You need Principles of Finance from somewhere else (there is a DSST), Business in Society/International Business (TECEP, Study.com), and then you need to plan out your AOS. That's all I'm seeing at a glance.

You should also consider Study.com, 2 courses at a time (you pay $199/mo less coupon, and that includes 2 exams during that month). I suggest Globalization & International Management to satisfy the International Business requirement, and Principles of Finance. There are others, especially ones that SL doesn't cover.

Saylor, while cheap, is not necessarily the fastest. People on this forum complain that there is WAY too much info, bad links, bad setup, etc. So going through a better-designed course may be a faster option.

I also now recommend that after you take ALEKS Stats, that you then take Saylor's Business Stats course to go into your AOS as OPM-351.

I also recommend that if you take SL's Accounting I & II, that you also just continue on with Financial Accounting & Managerial Accounting (coming in as ACC-201 and ACC-303).
