I got a job as an instructor...

Regardless of how a future prestigious university may see it, you get out of a job you despise, and that has to be worth something. In any event, I say congratulations!

P.S. I just thought of something. I do have a friend, who has an MBA from Bryant, that started teaching night courses at a CC. This gave him the experience to land a full time position teaching at Johnson & Wales.

Daithi, which campus?

I know PhD's that have taught at CC as adjuncts to start and moved up to "real" colleges Like Rutgers and I know MAA's that have started teaching at a CC and taught as adjunct at 3 others before finally getting full professorship at another.

Where you start doesn't matter get the experience and be a good teacher get good reviews on Ratemyprofessor.com so kids want to be in your class and it will be an asset to whatever comes next.

I wish I could have gotten a job at a community college. It would be several steps up from a nationally accredited, vocational school that is the butt of local jokes and advertises during court shows and tacky talk shows. I applied to a few openings at the local community colleges. I think the problem is my degree in security studies. It's a sub-field of international relations, and international relations is a sub-field of political science. Most people don't seem to know that. They would probably hire me to teach homeland security, but there are never any openings in that department.

Don't put the college or yourself down,at least yet. I have been very surprised at how some colleges are viewed by others especially those from a different area. When I was younger and just out of High School TESC was just starting to advertise. I thought it was funny just another correspondence school. Wow have I learned my lesson.

What is now "The College of New Jersey" Used to be Trenton State Teachers College and just about anyone could get in and no one wanted to.

Fairleigh Dickinson was not thought of with any respect we used to call it Fairly Ridiculous. Recently I slipped and called it that to a graduate he was highly offended. Of course he thought TESC was a diploma mill.

Rutgers College (Before it was part of the state University system) was an Ivy league school and highly thought of by most. Now I have heard Graduates of the college say; well since it became a University it is not as good as it was. I used to live pretty close to Rutgers (In late 70's to 90's) and it seemed to us that anyone could get in and it was not that great a school. I learned that outside of our local area it was considered hard to get in and an excellent school.

So just because your new school is the butt of jokes now doesn't mean that can't change.I don't know who you be working for but Devry Institute, Lincoln Tech and a couple other NA VoTech schools are beginning to get a better reputation. Of course each campus is different but if students come out ready for a job some people consider the school good.

As long as you are not becoming a Phoenix(I hate those commercials), I don't think you can go wrong getting the experience.

FYI. My friend now a CC professor has his BA in drama and his MA in Production, but he has made his mark teaching remedial and beginning composition. So start out small and keep applying to all the CC's in your area as an adjunct for the hours you are free and you never know where things may go.

Hey Jennifer I forgot to ask how do you Like NC? By the way if you want a great trip with the kids around Christmas go to the Columbia Riverbanks Zoo, they have an amazing light show and night viewing of the animals when most are more active. Also if you ever come up to visit Canisius give me a call I am not far we can do lunch:-)

Devry has been regionally accredited for awhile. This votech school looks it will never pursue RA. It's been the butt of jokes since I was a child. I'm just happy to get some in class training. Very few employers are willing to give the inexperienced a chance these days, but I honestly believe I was the only qualified person who applied. They were so impressed by my masters, but it was listed as a requirement.

I think my biggest issue is guilt. I think the school is a ripoff and is selling false promises to its criminal justice students. All I can do is try to give them a decent education, but they will more than likely end up in low paying jobs that don't require a degree. The associates will allow them to apply to police departments that require it, but I don't know how many will require RA. Then, there is the issue of transferring credits. Schools like these are fine for votech, but CJ is not a votech field outside of the police academy. It's not paralegal studies or medical assisting.

Anchor Bar is good for the history, but everyone says Duff's has the best wings. This weekend is the Buffalo Wing Fest that is what my son is coming up for not to see his poor Momma who misses him.Sad

PM me when the time is near Bill would love to meet you too.

I don't know if the teaching experience will look good on my CV. Considering the type of school it is, it'll probably keep me out of the better colleges when I graduate with my PhD. I can always keep it off my CV and focus on the instructional assistantship I'll be starting next semester or school year at Texas State.

[COLOR="#000080"]CONGRATS!!!!!

When you're teaching others to excel, passing on what you have learned, whether RA, NA, or whatever-A, you have no need to feel like you're selling your soul!! Besides, your teaching experince will look GREAT on your CV as it show that you have some (experience) rather than having.....none.

BTW: I may have missed it, but what school are you referring too?
