Humanities Music
#1
Hi,

I'm studying for my Humanities CLEP on 6/30 using IC. I seem to be learning pretty quicky, but the music section just is not sticking. No clue why I can't remember this stuff! Is this a large portion of the test? Is there something else I can do to prepare?

I've read through a lot of the hints on the forum and I love the tips that other people have provided, but I didn't see anyone mention music.

Thanks!

Hi burbuja0512,

I'm also just starting to prepare for the Humanities CLEP. I have the 2007 'Cracking the CLEP' in addition to the 2009 Official CLEP guide and another book covering the 6cr general CLEP tests.

The breakdown of the test according to these three sources is roughly as follows:

% of Test # of Questions Subject
----------------------------------------------
50 70 The Arts
20 28 Visual Arts (painting, sculpture, etc)
5 7 Visual Arts (architecture)
15 21 Music
10 14 Performing Arts (music, film, dance, etc)

50 70 Literature
10 to 15 14 to 21 Poetry
15 to 20 21 to 28 Fiction
10 14 Drama
10 14 Nonfiction (philosophy, etc)

So to answer your question, around 15%. However, reading the feedback from others for this test, it is definitely approximately 15%.

Good luck!

Just took the exam last week. As mentioned by most, what you see on your test may be vastly different than what others have said. Mine wasn't even close...

In regards to music, I only ended up having 3-4 specific questions I can remember. Composers were not mentioned at all and they were all based on a picture of sheet music.

-Know your styles
-Know your composers by periods (remembering the century is good enough)
-Know the basics of sheet music (notation, dynamics, key)

In the end, I would say focus on what IC has in the flashcards which I had more than 75% of mine come almost directly from. Outside of that, it is just like Jeopardy...you never know what you'll get.

Good luck on the exam!

Thank you so much! I am terrified because this is my first CLEP other than Spanish (but I lived in Mexico for six years so I fluent). I have been studying quite a bit and the advice is reassuring.
