How to get ACE credit through a college that will not accept it?

My lousy old community college in Southern California has locked me out of an A.A.S degree by one math class for years even though I have a documented math learning disability. I have now have College Algebra completed through ALEKS and should be able to get the A.A.S degree.Note that community college is listed on ACE's website as part of the network. I was told by an admissions councilor that I would have to talk to the department chair. I was then told ALEKS doesn't meet the high standards of that prestigious community college. :p

I've been trying to think of loop holes on getting the ALEKS credit through. I'm wondering on this idea: what if I transferred the ALEKS course to another accredited California college which did accept it? If the course is approved at another college, I could then transfer it back to the community college I mentioned and get it auto approved?

I know this would be tricky and it isn't that important anymore but it would great if possible. I heard that straighterline courses could run into the same issue and that there were ways of getting around it.

I'm going for a Bachelor's at WGU but in the meantime getting my A.A.S would at least be something. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I believe what your are trying to do with the ALEKS course is called "laundering" credits. One school used to do it, but they have since stopped. If one school did accept the ACE course from ALEKS it will probably still show up as ACE credit from ALEKS. In which case your current school probably still wouldn't accept it.


I don't know if WGU is as credit-accepting as the Big-3, but do they accept ALEKS through ACE? If so just have your 57 CC credits sent to WGU and an ACE transcript, and you should be half way towards your BA. If that won't work perhaps you should consider TESC or COSC, does WGU offer something that the former do not?

To the best of my knowledge, the CC would be unlikely to accept the credit even if another institution did. Take my Freshman College Comp. exam. Two of the universities I have attended have accepted it; two of them have not. The fact that it is on two of the transcripts did not make the other schools think twice about accepting it. They just don't take it for credit. The fact that they accepted other CLEPs did not change anything, so it would not be a stretch to imagine that the CC won't budge even though they are in the ACE network. They ultimately decide what ACE credit, if any, to accept.

I don't think you will have any luck "laundering" the credit but you may have a chance with appealing the decision. We have heard from others here that their CC's used ALEKS for math courses, I also met a girl this past week that had cone to Coastal Carolina University and was now at Barry University in Miami both also used ALEKss so maybe if you can find other more prestiguios universities that use aleks maybe you can convine them that "ALEKS doesn't meet the high standards of that prestigious community college" is something they need to look harder at.

Let me ask you a couple questions before giving you my answer- is your placement score too low that you can't enroll in college algebra right now? That's an important question, because the developmental sequence can add years to a degree, and that is a problem I'd answer one way vs if you're already eligible to enroll.
Also, is college algebra the lowest math or the specific math required of your specific degree? college math is a high level of math for many AAS degrees, so are you 100% sure that is correct?
Finally, if you're willing, will you share the name of your school so I can dig into their policy book?
