Penn Foster offers certificate programs that prepare you for the ASE exams. I thought about taking at least one of them. I'm a female who doesn't even know how to change a tire or oil. I've always been wary of auto mechanics. Of course, no one trusts used care salesmen, but I have found private sellers to be even more untrustworthy. I had one try to sell me a stolen car. I found out it was stolen because the VIN I took down didn't exist on CarFax and the guy couldn't provide me with a good one. He also said over the phone that the car worked perfectly, but when I met him, he had a mechanic with him who had to do some stuff under the hood to even get the car to start. Another guy didn't tell my sibling that his car had a salvaged title until the transaction was about to be made. Even though I had one of those inspection services check out a car I was buying from a private seller, I didn't find out that the car had major transmission and radiator repair until after the transaction was made. He was like, "Oh, I have these receipts that show the repairs are still under warranty just in case you need them." That sounded good and all that the major problems were supposedly fixed, but the transmission ended up having more problems. Unfortunately, the warranty wasn't transferable. Now, I only buy cars from dealers, but still get them inspected.

Many good points! Unfortunately, women are targeted when it comes to buying or fixing cars & trucks. I can out deal a car dealer so I don't mind buying from anybody. I also fix all of my own stuff, unless of course I can't. The best books for prepping for the ASE tests are done by DELMAR and even then I and they would recommend a good textbook and/or practical experience. My practical experience is already in the can so I'm going to accomplish A1 through A8 and get the ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician.
