How many books do you usually read a year?

I hate reading!!! Hate is not even the right word to explain how much I don't like reading...
The only books in high school that I enjoyed was Hamlet and Macbeth.
Do you not like physically reading, or do you not like stories? Like, do you like to listen to books if they are on tape or dramatized?

Maybe that's why I like Shakespeare in high school. We heard it on a tape. But I don't think I would have patience listening to a tape. I do like stories though so all the other books that I had to read in high school, I just listened to the teacher say the story.

Can I count Star Wars books?
How about CLEP guides and college text books?
What about scholarly journal articles for my MBA?
How about computer certification books?

If so then then I am way up there. I think its about 50.

Oh so if I can add CLEP guides, I read 4 books; not 2...lol but it still doesn't make a big difference.

Baha, well you don't just have to sit and listen Big Grin That's what I love about audiobooks. I do chores, exercise, etc. while I listen. If I had any modern technology in my car I would listen while driving, Confusedmilelol:

Purpleteen, try to find a way to love reading. It is very important to have a love for reading in order to continue to learn and grow in life.
You can condition yourself to like almost anything. It happened to me with beer Smile

Ryoder, It's probably apocryphal, but I heard once that Mahatma Gandi drank his own urine. When I say beer tastes terrible, people tell me it's an acquired taste. I suppose one could acquire a taste for anything.

ah, books. Smile Unfortunately, I haven't been able to read as many since i started studying. Sad Generally, I read classic literature(Dickens, Austen, Greek classics, Stevenson, Hawthorne, etc.), History books( in a narrative form) and good fantasy stories, primarily Tolkien and Lewis, no occult stuff.

I used to read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on. But this past year I've read maybe 15 or 20 academic books for school and NO fiction. I feel kind of guilty for it (and I genuinely miss reading for fun), but I'm being so productive with school that it's hard to justify. :/

My Amazon tag is "Voracious Devourer of the Written Word" which pretty well sums things up. Wink

I probably go through 2 or 3 books a week. The Kindle has been a Godsend since I no longer fill up closets with old books. (I can't throw them away, it feels wrong.) The only downside is that I can't give the good ones to friends and I end up having to buy them a copy.

I try to read one "constructive book" for every five "fillers". It can be on any topic as long as some sort of personal growth is the goal. For example, I'm reading the "Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" right now. There's a lot of good stuff in there and I think it's free in the Kindle store if anyone wants to give it a try.

Usual genres are:

Science Fiction (Snow Crash, Robert Heinlein and Warhammer 40k for the win!)
Fantasy (Loves me some Robert Jordon)
Military Fiction (Clancy, Coots, Hemingway)
Self Help (Huge fan of Tim Ferris, Malcolm Gladwell, Dave Ramsey)
Fiction (Partial to the classics, but a good story is a good story)
Non-fiction (Usually biographies and histories)
Philosophy (It's been a few months, but "Letters from a Stoic" was the last one I read)
Westerns (My dad got me hooked on Louis L'Amour at an early age)

I will second, third and fourth the encouragements to learn to love reading. I know it can be a drag, but learning to love it when you're young will help you out so much in life. There is so much useful information out there that can seriously improve your life, but the chances of you finding it without reading are slim. Seriously.. Cannot stress it enough.
