How does the admission process works? especially for international students?
#1
Hi all, I am applying to UMPI as an international student and the admission process looks different than what students from the US undergo. Also, I am confused about transferring the credits I earned at previous univ. and the ACE sources. Everyone here is advising not to apply until we get 90 or most of the alternate credits and I struck in catch-22 situation with the never ending confusion. I request a little help to escape this.

1. I am doing Sophia courses earned 16 credits till now, taking the courses with no alternates in my previous univ.

2. I have some credits from previous university, which included a Science subject with lab, Environmental science, English etc.,
When I contact the admissions office they clarified that I don't need IELTS/TOFEL if I have completed a university level English course. So, transferring these courses will reduce a considerable amount of work I should take.

3. But, the problem here is, how can I figure out which courses from previous univ. gets transferred and which doesn't, without applying? Is there a time period between applying and completing the non-transfer courses from alternate sources before I get accepted?

4. When should I send my transcripts to WES? before applying or after?

Any help with clarifying these is appreciated, thanks in advance.

You need to send your transcripts to WES right now. Before applying. WES will tell you what the courses are equivalent to. Then you can come back here with the WES report (redacted to remove your personal info) and we can give you a reasonable idea as to what UMPI will accept and what they will not.

Once you apply, you can contact them to defer enrollment if you want to bring in more couurses. Usually, they just enroll you automatically and then you need permission to bring in more courses. So, you do have options.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Where are you from? Which degree are you going for? Why UMPI? Apply here, you need TOEFL/IELTS unless you're from an English speaking country (such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand or UK as examples): https://www.umpi.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/

Send in all your transcripts to WES or any NACES organization to have your credits evaluated (the website states WES, but their catalogs have ACEI/NACES showing up as well, so any authorized agency under those two will work). Once you have the evaluation, you'll know what's missing.

If you want to be ahead of the game, copy/paste an evaluation you have from your school, just provide us more details, remove your personal info. We can estimate the transfers and see what you might have an option to transfer in, also list your Sophia courses and anything else.

You also need a Language and a Science with Lab, so tell us what other languages you know. You can complete the ACTFL or NYUFLPT for credits towards your degree requirements. InstantCertCredit Spanish I and Study.com BIO W/Lab or CHEM W/Lab are good options...

The TOEFL/IELTS requirement is waived if the student has English Composition I (or II, ACE ones are accepted too). Also, the high school transcript is waived if the student has 60+ credits (including ACE credits).

UMPI has stated that they only accept international transcripts through WES. They're actually sent to the U of M system not directly to UMPI.

If an international student has no interest in transferring previously earned non-US college credit, what documents do you need to send to UMPI?
Do you need to send documents like a high school diploma translated into English? Even if you have completed ENG composition 1 & 2?
Should ACE credits be sent through WES?

I was about to apply to UMPI but I used ACEI evaluation services. I'm hoping it's not just WES. I think I just have Spanish, American Government (may take at UMPI since I'm Canadian and not sure Instantcert will keep my attention) and Biology/lab (can't procrastinate any further!) If I want to apply for the March session would now be a good time to apply?

Canadian credits are different. Check with Admissions if you need to go through WES if they're Canadian credits.

Sorry for missing the crucial details in the first post.
I am from India, and planning for BABA Project Management. I chose UMPI due to it's cost, even for 2 sessions it costs significantly less.
And another reason is, it's a state university offering online options. PUG or UMass will be looked down here, because they are purely online universities, still a taboo among recruiters. UMPI will give a better impression when searched for.

Regarding English test, the conversation went this way

"Hi Madam, Thank you for the information. I am sending my transcripts to WES for evaluation. I have a query regarding English proficiency testing, which I forgot to ask, is it mandatory to submit the test even if my medium of instruction in High School is English? If so, do you accept the Duolingo English Test as an alternative to TOEFL or IETLS?"

"Hi student,

We do not require English testing scores as long as ENG was a course taken at your previous university. If it was not, please send the test you mentioned officially to our processing center and we will determine whether it will qualify. If you have it sent electronically it can be sent to edocs@maine.edu."

And according to UMaine website
  • DET (Duolingo English Test) – minimum score of 105. Due to the ongoing global health pandemic, UMaine will continue accepting the DET score as an approved method to demonstrate English proficiency (valid for Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 admission cycles).  Click here for information on submitting your official DET score to UMaine.

Sent my documents to WES, waiting for processing. Will update with the complete evaluation. Thank you.
