How does grading actually work?

I've recently completed my third class this semester and received my grading feedback, and for the first time I haven't scored all "4's" in every category. I would assume based on the grading scale that scoring "exemplary" in every category would be a 100%, or a 1.0 according to the "competencies with project based final assessments portion of the rubric. 

For example, in my most recent class, there were 7 categories. For my grade, I scored "exemplary", or a "4" in 6 categories, and "proficient" in 1 category. Would the grading potentially look like: 

7x4 = 28 total points possible
My score, 6x4 = 24 + 3x1 = 27
So, 27/28, or 0.96.4 on the grading scale indicating an "A" instead of an A+? 

If so, does this mean that an A (not an A+) is a 3.7, or a 4.0? 


If someone has an answer to this, I would sure appreciate it.

In the meantime, thanks for everyone on the forum's help in guiding me to UMPI. It's been amazing so far.

Basically, I have a bad memory and I don't remember, but if you dig up the post from Ashkir, it will indicate what GPA and Latin honors are available at UMPI... I don't recall there being an A+ option, you may also want to check the UMPI website for details as well. My guess so far is, you'll at an A with that course example you have.

I wouldn't worry about the scoring until grades are posted after the session ends. The math doesn't always align with the final grade. Both A and A+ are a 4.0 at UMPI.

The real question is how many are not A+

Both A and A+ are 4.0.
A+ is to recognize exceptional performance and it does not affect your GPA.

Cool to know there is no GPA difference between an A and A+, most schools give a different grade for their A and A+ counterparts and does affect the GPA.

It's actually a huge bummer that there is no difference because an A+ is extremely difficult to receive. There are schools who do use 4.3 or 4.33 for A+. I sure wish UMPI did.
