How did you learn about testing out of your degree?

On the subject of this thread, I first learned about testing out of a degree through bain4weeks.com

Although the material is outdated, it was a great source to get me interested enough to research the possibilities.

I'm not going to use names, however, I will say that someone mentioned in this thread who makes BANK off of peddling information given here freely, contacted ME to set up several new things and develop current aspects of their program. I declined. I've saved the emails, because you never know when you need to have an ace in your pocket, but PLEASE PEOPLE..... buyer beware.

Jay Cross runs ads for his Do It Yourself Degree (DIY) plan. For the $100 membership fee you get his booklet on how to test out, references to the Big 3, his cross tabulation test vs. transfer equivalency, his personal success story, and access to his DIY Forum where I have made several ongoing acquantances. In his booklet he refers to InstaCert as a great test study source. From there of course, you find this forum.

One person contacted me last year to help them put together a subscription website. I was thinking, "Uh, no," but turned him down politely. I don't really have a problem with starting an education consulting business, but I felt like this person wanted to profit off of other people's knowledge that had already been put out there for free. I think that if you're going to become some kind of paid consultant, then you need to be an expert and not have to rely so heavily on others.

Why should he be paid for advertising? And, with that logic, there are hundreds of people on this forum who deserve $100 each.

While I certainly agree with you that the "free" advice provided on this forum is worth real $$, Jay's advertising does cost him real money. Like andrewtn, I could figure out that Jay's main "big idea" was nothing more than making his reader's aware of the Big 3. However, until I found Jay's ad, I was completely unaware of their existence. In my case Jay's ad saved me many hours of searching for an answer to help my ADD son finish his degree (about 100 hr. of credit at that time) in a format and time span that would keep him in the game. While Jay's success story, other reference material, and forum did not prove to be particularly germane to my son's music degree, I feel that Jay does provide value comensurate with the price he asks.

I guess it's just a different way of looking at things. I see it as akin to paying Cheerios for a box of cereal you aren't going to eat just because their commercials informed you that whole grains can lower your risk for heart disease. For-profit companies spend money on advertising because they expect a return on that investment, not because they're simply trying to educate people about something. If they fail to get a person to purchase their product, then they don't deserve anything. They knew the risk going in. It's all a part of doing business. If Jay wants a return on his advertisement investment, then he needs to offer a product people want to buy. I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry for him if he lost money on marketing, but it sounds like he's doing well and is in no need of charity. If what you say he is doing is true (nothing more than making readers aware of the Big 3), then his whole operation is a scam making him less deserving of any charity.
