I think this reflects very badly on the entire academic discipline of education / sociology of education. Why didn't his peer shut him down earlier? There are con men everywhere, but most disciplines have better policing.

I don't know about the UK, but Black people in the U.S. are already underrepresented in academia.

This problem is unique to sociology and any field that doesn't rely on peer-reviewed articles to judge professor applicants. Sociology prefers books. However, other fields are not immune to these mistakes. Some of the most notorious frauds in academia were White and Asian men in STEM. One European physicist got away with fabricating data for years. No one had checked his work.

Society doesn't quite know how to deal with narcissists and psychopaths who aren't serial killers. The U.S. has the most famous pathological liar, and he's in a position of power that has allowed him to do massive damage globally. Thankfully, Arday is neither a medical researcher nor a political leader.

To me the most tragic part is that he probably does have the capacity to make a massive contribution. Now it will be a very long time, if ever, before he is taken seriously.

There is a certainly a double-standard here for people of color. There are literally people (ex: the racist in reference) who spend their lives trying to get these people fired, yet white men in academia do this all the time with a slap on the wrist.

Like the former president of Stanford falsified Alzheimers research, got caught, AND STILL WORKS THERE.

Absolutely terrible, and so sad. Cause of death is unknown, but likely related to all this. Nobody should have to die for this.

Obviously, he was suffering from serious psychological problems. I don't believe that he was a run-of-the-mill fraudster; I think he was lying due to self-esteem issues. It also appeared that he was bleaching his skin. His friends and family members should have intervened and gotten him psychological help. Maybe they tried.

Investigating him wasn't the problem; he should have been investigated. The problem was that this was turned into an attack on Black academics. British universities have had numerous White professors who either resigned or were fired for academic fraud, but it didn't turn into some public DEI discussion.

Honestly, this is irrelevant and takes away from the second point you make. We don’t even know how he died yet and here you are jumping to diagnosis him from behind a computer screen.

He could have been diagnosed with a myriad of disorders and none of them would justify the attacks on him for being black. Honestly, if he were white, this wouldn’t have happened, because the guy who outed him was doing so to get black academics fired.

And who’s to say he wasn’t receiving help? Who’s to say his family wasn’t trying to help? They are irrelevant.

Immediately jumping to conclusions that he was mentally ill and that his family didn’t do enough is not something I see for white men caught in the same situation. Why is the burden off the University and colleagues?
