History Upper Level Credits (Please help!)
#1
Hi everyone!

I have a question. I am enrolled at TESC and just received my evaluation (as of Monday, 5/13/13). I am getting my BA in History.

Anyway, I had thought that they would count Intro to World Religions (DSST) as a History Elective (per "History of Religion"). (I know...it's "humanities," but how close can you get to "history of religion?") Anyway, I just got off the phone with the academic advisor and they said it won't count. So, that means that I am short with my Upper Level Credits. So far, I have Vietnam War (UL) and will take Soviet Union, World Conflicts (ECE), and the Capstone (all UL). That means I am 6 credits away from my 18 UL credits. I am running out of UL history DSST and CLEP exams. TESC offers a "War and American Society" class (6 UL credits). Is that the best option, for me? The deadline to enroll for June classes is tomorrow. (I never cut it, this close, but having just received my evaluation, I didn't know!) My goal was to graduate by December (everything has to be turned in, by Oct. 1st). I don't know if I can swing that, but I am going to try!

Any help or advice is appreciated!

Blessings!

The TESC website lists DSST Introduction to the Modern Middle East as HIS-309-DE, upper level. I'm disappointed that Civil War and Reconstruction is now apparently bumped down to lower level at TESC. I believe War and American Society is pretty popular around here.

Looking at some of the standby sources of independent study courses for Big Three students…
University of Idaho and partners: History Courses
BYU Independent Study: University Courses See the section History. JAPAN 302 Readings in Japanese History and Culture might work, though might also go to humanities. I'm not seeing a history of science/technology course description in the TESC PLA database to which BYU's TECH 201 and TECH 202 would clearly correspond.
LSU Independent Study: History Courses
CSU-Pueblo Independent Study: History Courses

They show the DSST Intro to the Modern Middle East as UL History DANTES

You might consider that along with a single self paced course from the University of Idaho History-Independent Study in Idaho-University of Idaho These are only $300/3 credits and they are pretty flexible, cheaper certainly than a TESC course, be sure you don't duplicate the others.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Thank you, Jonathan!

About Middle East...I am using it under my "Non-Western History: Africa; Asia; Latin America; Middle East;" (outline: Thomas Edison State College: History) I agree...Civil War should be UL.

Thanks for the links...I'll do some research!

If your taking Modern Middle East it should count both UL and whatever other non western history requirement....it should be a twofer.

Oh, yes! My bad!

So, my options are:
-Using Middle East and World Conflicts (ECE), plus another 3 UL credit course
-OR-
Using Middle East and the TESC course "War and American Society" (6 credits...so, I would drop the ECE and extra course)

What is the quickest route? I know the TESC course is a 12-week study and would overlap when I plan to take my Capstone.
