BYU's Hidden Gem - Sport Psychology
#1
Hi All,

I’ve been meaning to share what I think is a "hidden gem" for those looking for 3 UL credits - BYU's Online Independent Study course Psych 338 - Sport Psychology.

I was looking for an UL course with no writing requirement and a straightforward multiple-choice final exam. I completed this course in two months (warp-speed territory for me), but most can move along at a faster pace.

The instructor claims you do not need a background in psychology to complete this course, but having taken 7 psychology exams prior to this, I personally believe previous psych experience is at the very least extremely helpful – each person will have to read through the syllabus and judge for him/herself.

The course is completely structured around the required text Sport Psychology, which I purchased from Amazon for the amazing sum of ONE CENT. You will read and answer multiple-choice questions on every chapter of this text.

The course consists of
14 ten question open-book multiple-choice practice exams - 0 points each.
14 ten question open-book multiple-choice "Speedback" exams - 4 points each
It behooves you to do as well as possible on the Speedback assignments as this enables you to relax a bit on the final. You can retake any of the Speedbacks for a $10 fee.

The final exam is a 97 question multiple-choice exam covering all 26 chapters of the text. You must pass the final to pass the course, but here’s where this course shines – the grading scale. A passing grade on the final is a 35 (NO I’M NOT KIDDING). You can even retake the final once for a small fee.

The way I interpreted the grading scale is that in order to receive an “A” in the class, you only need a total score of 85 – receive your 56 points on the Speedbacks, pass the final, you should get an “A”.

You must plan ahead and get an approved proctor for the final. I used my local CC with no problems.

The price for this course is $519…If cost is not a problem; it is well worth checking out…

I took this course years ago as my first psych course. I think a psych (basic knowledge) background is essential.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.
