Help with TESC CIS Degree Plan - Ged Ed
#1
Hello,

Found this form and am grateful for it. I have been looking and searching this form for information and degree plans for the TESC Computer Information Systems Bachelor Degree. I am confused on several points and would be grateful for any help.

I have roughly a year of community college and have also taken some CLEP tests. Trying to map out the general and business requirements for the CIS degree. Looking at brucet3's degree plan, the general requirements are broken up into categories such as Humanities and Social Sciences, but these headings to not match up with the current Ged Ed Requirements on TESC's website.

Any input on the plan below would be appreciated.

CLEP tests I have taken:
  • Information Systems
  • College Composition with Essay
  • Western Civ I & II
  • Marketing
  • Analyzing and Interpreting Literature

From TESC Computer Information Systems Credit Distribution:

I. General Education Requirements 60
A. Intellectual and Practical Skills
Written Communication - (CLEP College Composition + Essay - Complete)
Oral Communication - (Will take Community College Speech class)
Quantitative Literacy and Information Literacy - (What CLEP tests or SL courses could meet these? Other suggestions?)
B. Civic and Global Learning
Diversity - Any suggestions on CLEP or SL courses?
Ethics - (Planning to take SL Business Ethics or DSST Ethics in America Test)
Civic Engagement (What counts as this?)
C. Knowledge of Human Cultures (Would Wester Civ I&II + CLEP Social Science work for this?)
D. Understanding the Physical and Natural World (Suggestions on CLEP or other tests that could apply here?)
E. Mathematics (College Algebra and Trig courses complete)
F. General Education Electives (Could Analyzing and Interpreting Lit be applied here?)

TESC recently changed their Gen Ed requirements July 1st so some degree plans currently posted may be slightly out of date. Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, which you have already taken will satisfy the Information Literacy requirement with 3 credits left over for Gen Ed requirements. ALEKS which is popular, $20/month will satisfy the quantitative literacy requirement. I believe CLEP government will satisfy civic engagement requirement. I believe cultural anthropology or sociology will satisfy the diversity requirements. For the diversity requirement there are a bunch of classes that will satisfy the requirement. Knowledge of Human Cultures is either Humanities or Social Sciences so any social science or humanities would work. For natural science I believe any science or CIS course may work, lab is not required. The CLEP biology 6 credits will satisfy this requirement though there are plenty other courses. Some of the requirements have many classes to choose from so find subjects you are interested in or have knowledge about.

Sanantone has a great list here for Gen Ed requirements:

Put together a personal degree plan for TESC CIS. Any input is appreciated.

Questions:
  • Can you split the credit from a 6 credit CLEP test into two different Gen Ed Requirements? For example, for CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature, 3 credits to Information Literacy and 3 credit to Knowledge of Human Cultures?
  • Is there a DSST test or other test that will fulfill the TESC Computer Concepts requirement (CLEP Information Systems already applied to Gen Ed)?
  • Any suggestions for alternatives and/or tests to fulfill the TESC Principles of Finance requirement?
  • Can gen ed tests such as CLEP and DSST be applied to the 6 credits of electives at the end of the TESC Degree Description?

Thank you.

TESC transfers A and I lit CLEP exam as 2 separate 3 credit courses, Lit 291 and Lit 292. Lit 291 satisfies the Information literacy requirement and the other 3 credits Lit 292 would be considered an humanities elective.

There is a TECEP CIS 107 Computer Concepts and Applications.
Thomas Edison State College: All TECEPÂ Tests

Yes, for section IV the 6 credits are unrestricted electives and you can use almost any exam or course.
