Help with BA in English at TESC

First of all I want to thank all of you for such valuable info on the forum. Your help has given me the courage to finally finish a degree. If I do finish, I would be the first in my entire family to do so. So this is pretty big for me, and for them.

The goal is a BA in English from TESC: Thomas Edison State College: English

-----I already have completed these:

[CLEP]:

-Analyzing/Interpreting Lit: 67
-College Composition: 58
-College Spanish Language: 78

Total: 24 credits

[Aleks]:

-Beginning Algebra
-Intermediate Algebra
-College Algebra
-Trigonometry
-PreCalculus

Total: 15 credits (some will duplicate as I understand, right?)

[4-year university] (in Puerto Rico, regionally accredited by the Middle States):

-Social Science I and II: 6 credits
-Humanities I and II: 6 credits (this covers western civilization)
-Spanish I and II: 6 credits (this is a college composition course in Spanish: Latin-American literature analysis, poetry, linguistics, basic research, etc.)
-Intermediate English I and II: 6 credits (I think this would be considered a college composition course, but it was made for students whose first language is not English. Here's the link to the course description: http://generales.uprrp.edu/Departamentos...203103.pdf)
-Communications: 3 credits (focusing on radio, film and TV)
-Intro. to Music: 3 credits

Total: 30 credits

[4-year university in California]:

-Intro. to Computers: 2 credits
-Swimming: .5 credits
-Understanding Islam: 4 credits

Total: 6.5 credits

>>Grand total: 75.5 credits

------ I'm afraid my Spanish courses could duplicate the Spanish CLEP (though the CLEP tested fluency: listening/reading comprehension, and not composition or text analysis like the courses). Also, will my English courses duplicate the College Comp. CLEP? My other question is how should I go about the rest of the degree? I have to figure out a way to complete the literature courses required for the English area of study (considering BYU for those) and the General Ed. Electives. I think many of my credits could satisfy the electives, right?

Should I apply to TESC, have everything evaluated, and complete what's left while enrolled, even if it's outside of TESC? The Per Credit Tuition Plan would be my best bet, right? I could complete the 24 required credits with TECEP exams and satisfy more electives. At what stage should I do this? I've been reading this forum for a month now and I know many of my questions have been asked before, but I haven't found an answer that applies to my exact situation.

ANY help will be appreciated. Thanks a million you guys!!!

Fajardo, as a fellow Puerto Rican who also is the first to complete a Bachelor's in my family, congratulations on taking the initiative to finish what you started. For some time, I was on the fence about completing a Big 3 degree. My only regret now is that I waited so long. My degree has been well received and has already begun opening doors for me.

I would recommend you apply to at least two of the Big 3 (TESC, and maybe Charter Oak?). This way you can see which school gets you closest to your goal. Considering that your Spanish courses were not intro to Spanish courses, it is possible that they may transfer over as a Spanish elective, which will give you a few more Gen Ed credits, for example, the link here is for a Foreign Language degree (I know this is not what you are looking for, just using an example). In the requirements, Spanish literature courses are considered separate (literature of PR, CUBA). Thomas Edison State College: Foreign Language. This suggests to me that it may not be equivalent to the Spanish CLEP, which means more credits for you.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Prloko! Thanks for your feedback. I didn't know someone responded to my questions... sorry for replying so late. You bring a very good point regarding my Spanish courses and their potential equivalency as literature courses. I will definitely be paying attention to that possibility. I just applied to TESC and will take a look at Charter Oak. I was thinking about going for a BA in Humanities instead of English because of the lack of exams for that major and the extra expense this would bring. This is certainly an educational adventure and hopefully I can be done soon.
