Help to figure out what's left for degree at TESC

Hi everyone: My husband and I tried to figure out how many more credits (using Cook's awesome guide-thanks!) I need and we came up with 31 which is really depressing. I'm planning on applying to TESC for Liberal Arts or Humanities or any other major that's easiest to complete.

Can someone help me figure out a road map. I used Example #3 under Area of Study for Lib Arts cause I'm hopeless in Math and Science. Here's what I completed so far:

Yep, I have to confess I was lost before this forum but now there's hope thanks to all these awesome people who take the time to respond to help others.

ok, the first step is to pull up the TESC requirements for the degree(s) you are looking at. If you post it in this thread that would be super helpful. Then simply we'll go down the list pulling and sorting your credits into the right area. After that, whatever is left over is what you have left to earn.hilarious

31 credits, if correct, is SO DOABLE that you should be jumping for joy!!! Some of those might be free elecctive (FEMA) and others might be able to be completed with ALEKS or CLEP, so chin up!

I looked at the requirements again I am pretty sure you need a 3 credit college math and 6 credits in a natural science. the other 3 credits can be a computer class. From all the good reviews here maybe a ALEKS class or 2 would help.

Don't say you are hopeless in math and science. Anyone can get it if they have motivation and the right teacher. Don't let it discourage you from your goal.

Here's the TESC requirements for Lib Studies. For the 33 credits Area of Study in Example 3 -do you know if all 27 have to be in Humanities and 6 in Soc Science?


BA Lib Studies Requirements

I. General Education Requirements -60 credits
A. English Composition -6 credits

B. Humanities – 12 credits
Must include at least two subject areas

C. Social Sciences – 12 credits
Must include at least two subject areas

D. Natural Sciences and Mathematics -12 credits
One college-level mathematics course required – 3 credits
One computer science course recommended – 3 credits
Other natural sciences/mathematics –6 credits
Must include at least two subject areas

E. General Education Electives – 18 credits

II. Area of Study: Liberal Studies -33 credits

1. Students complete 33 credits in the liberal studies concentration

3.Courses transferred to Thomas Edison State College are equated to the following levels: 100, 200, 300 or 400. A maximum of two college-level courses equating to the 100 level can be applied toward the liberal studies area of study. A minimum of 18 credits equating to 300 or 400 Thomas Edison State College are required.
4. LIB-495 Liberal Arts Capstone strongly recommended.

Ok, first let me say I am not very familiar with TESC's policies , for instance I am not sure how TESC handles splitting credits, which I did in my breakdown below for A&I & Clep French. But based on what you posted I am computing you need 28 credits.
I would recommend you have someone with a good knowledge of TESC , such as COOK verify this looks ok.


Also use the info at this link to find tests that you can use to fill in the areas you still need Undergraduate Ways to Earn Credit - Thomas Edison State College - acalog ACMSâ„¢

Aleks or Straighterline may be a good way to pick up the Math credits needed.

I agree with everything Peace just broke down for you. I'll confirm that TESC doesl split credits- nothing is lost unless your slots are full.

You'll need 8 math/science credits, and there are no lab tests thus no 4 credit classes....which means simply you'll end up taking a 6+3 or 3 3's and ending up with 1 excess credit from the computer class which can be used as a gen ed elective. I'd highly suggest ALEKS Beginning and Intermediate algebras. It's totally at home on your computer, self paced, no exams, and only requres 70% to earn the credit. Cheap too, $20 per month work as fast as you want. (yes, you could do both classes inside of 1 month).
That leaves 1 more 3 credit class. You can check with TESC to see if any of the other computer exams wouldn't duplicate what you have- that's easy enough. The other option is to do another ALEKS math (college algebra) if it's going well for you, or to take the CLEP College Math. That's more expensive- but an option none the less. It is 6 credits but 3 duplicate Beg. Algebra, so you'll net 3. Anyway, this is an area you can start working on even before your TESC evaluation. ALEKS -- Assessment and Learning, K-12, Higher Education, Automated Tutor, Math

Also, since you are bilingual, you may be able to get more than 4 Spanish credits. The CLEP for Spanish gives you 12 humanities credits- this is worth looking at. Even if you duplicate the 4 you have, that's a net of 8 in one exam!!

Lastly, with all of your humanities credits, have you considered simply earning your degree in humanities instead of liberal arts?

If TESC accepts Chinese language, then I think I can easily get about 12 credits since I studied it through the Foreign Service Institute which is listed as one of the places from which they accept credits. I just sent TESC an email asking them if they will accept the Chinese.

Do you think my Upper Level HR & Employment Law courses can be used anywhere?

If I do Humanities, I'll have to take 2 Journalism courses right? Will check more into it.

I almost let a biology course prevent me from earning my degree! It's a brick wall, you just have to decide if it's your brick wall, and if you're going to let it stop you.
