Help choosing degree and college
#1
Hi,
I have an interesting mix of certifications and credits and I need help in choosing a degree and college among the Big 3.

Certifications -
Private Pilot License
Instrument Rating
Commercial Pilot License
(TESC and COSC grant 24-27 credits for the above licenses combined)

Cisco Certified Network Associate ( 3 credit)
Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator (Waiting for answer from TESC, COSC - no credit)
Red Hat Certified Engineer ( Waiting for answer from TESC, COSC - no credit)

Classes already taken -
ENG 101 - 3 credits
ENG 201 - 3 credits
Engineering Physics - ??
Engineering Chemistry - ??
Basics of Electrical and Electronics Engineering - ??
Computer Engineering - ??
Engineering Dynamics - ??
Engineering Mathematics - ??
General Physics II - 5 credits
Sociology - 3 credits
Intro to Educational Psychology - 3 credits
Calculus II - 4 credits
Honors Seminar - 4 credits

The ?? are foreign credits and they all should be between 3-5 credits per subject.

So with this in mind, I need some insight on which degree and which college to choose. I would like a BS in Computer Science or Technical Studies at TESC but they are $3000 to enroll while COSC is $300 per semester for enrollment. I would like to test out all my remaining requirements barring the capstone/cornerstone courses and I would like to know how somebody who has already done their BA/BS in Computer/Technical Degrees done it.

Thanks.

You can't even come close to testing out of one of those degrees even with the credits you already have. However, Penn Foster offers some ACE approved electrical, engineering, and construction courses. Where did you get your current credits? If they were coded as 100/200 or 1000/2000 level at the original college, COSC is only going to give you LL credit. COSC's semester enrollment fee is a little cheaper than that at $240.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I understand that it may be difficult to test out those courses and I guess that is a reality I have to accept. Considering my courses, which degree will be easiest to complete at COSC and at TESC. I may come back to my original plan of CS or Tech degree later but right now I am just looking for a degree.

Edit:
The engineering credits were from an engineering college and I am sure they will be evaluated as 300-400 level. I am waiting on the official transcript evaluation. The other credits are from a CC and hence going to be LL credits.

Oops. Never mind, I forgot you had all of those pilot credits. You might be close to finishing a technical studies major at TESC depending on how many upper level credits they gave you. However, TESC requires 21 credits in one discipline and 18 credits in another. COSC has a Technology Studies program, but I don't know if your pilot credits would apply.TESC also has the Bachelor of Applied Science and Technology learner designed area of study. This is where you design your own major. COSC has a similar individualized studies program, but I think that's either a BS or BA. Whatever you name your self-designed major won't be the official name of your degree at either school.

TESC has a BSAST in Aviation Flight Technology.
Thomas Edison State College: Aviation Flight Technology

Did you already apply to both schools? Once you apply to TESC, you can use the academic evaluation function in Online Student Services to see how your credits apply to other degree programs.

TESC has a BACS but I'm not sure how that will be viewed in the IT industry. Most of the math and core requirements will have to be from classes taken.Maybe someone else can chime in with more info about alternate sources but I cant seem to find any.
Im in a similar situation in wanting a degree now and would prefer it be IT focused.I decided to go for the BSBA and then spend my money and time on an IT related MS of some sort.

I applied to COSC and am waiting on my foreign credit evaluation to be completed and then they can give me some insight. I haven't applied to TESC mainly because of the cost of enrollment but if COSC doesn't work out, I will. The Aviation Flight Technology Electives are pretty expensive to get and hence not an option for me.

COSC told me that my licenses can contribute only 6 credits towards concentration requirements and the rest will have to be applied towards free/general electives. I am aiming for the Technical Studies concentration but am trying to come up with a fall back plan in case that turns out to be non-feasible.

With these credits, am I a good candidate for BSBA General Management or something similar at COSC?

TESC has the BSBA in Computer Information Systems in which you can test out of most of the requirements.

If you were to do a business degree at either school, you would almost be testing from scratch. It doesn't look like you have any business credits. Some of the credits you have now would go into free electives, and the rest will be free electives.
