I failed the Speech DSST back in the 90's and (I bombed the verbal part) I would just take the BYU online course, it is easier and "More Conservative" than DSST.
No books and just 3-5 speeches required on a tape recorder, depending on how you do on the first 3.
There is no research on the DSST, it just a impromptu speech and you were Politically Incorrect on your views, that is what nailed you.

The fact that she "couldn't fire a weapon" is a reflection on HER and her training, not that she was a woman. There are women who can skeet shoot men under the table. There are plenty who can run farther and faster, too. Not every guy in the service is a Navy Seal and neither is every woman. One woman who was inept does not support an argument for why ALL women shouldn't be in combat. There are valid arguments why women should or shouldn't be in combat but that example wasn't one of them.
Geez, I was always proud to be a sexist pig and now you made me go all women's lib! Oh the shame....
Yeah, like my daughter who is in the Army and had one of the best shooting scores in her class, finished first in physical fitness in her unit, and just finished airborne school where lots of males were kicked out. She was the only one in her unit to go to airborne school, and was picked because of her physical fitness rating.
EC - BSLS Finally done!

I was given "Women in Combat" as my topic, something which I am opposed to. (I am not saying women can NOT be in the Army, I'm merely saying they do NOT belong in combat) I proceeded to give my opinion, proven facts, AND the example of Jessica Linch, the woman who got captured because she didn't know how to FIRE HER WEAPON! She got captured, we had to get her out, I'm pretty sure at least one of those soldiers got wounded, and SHE GOT A MEDAL FOR BEING A POW!
You had me at the parenthesis......then you lost me. Not actually "proven facts". She didn't get captured because she didn't know how to fire her weapon. It supposedly jammed. She and her unit were ambushed, that is why she was captured. As for the rescue, we always look to retrieve our own. Your reasons are your reasons, but just to counterpoint (I can't help myself), sounds like you want to give them the good duty only? This takes away from tours that those who have paid dearly would like to have. This was an old argument w/some valid reasons. They wanted it, they knew the risks, they got it. By the way, I agreed w/your thinking long ago, I realize now I was wrong. Boy, that was hard to admit. I'm going back to the bullpen to warm up. Better luck next time.

By some bizarre twist of fate, I actually passed this exam. My results came today with a pass for both the written and oral sections. Honestly, I did not want to open the envelope.
If I had it to do over, I am not sure I would have gone this route to fulfill the credit requirement. If you do decide to take the test, leave lots of time to get the result. Mine showed up within 5 weeks but I was very nervous trying to find courses to get around a failure. I am relieved to say the least
