I love this. She just demonstrated how ridiculous we are in the way we teach kids about things like drugs and sex. Hardly any kid eats pomegranates, but now everyone wants to bring pomegranates to class. This is exactly what the D.A.R.E. did. A lot of research has been done on this failed program. All it did was expose suburban kids to drugs they had never heard of, and they used the information to decide which drugs would be safest to try i.e. marijuana and club drugs.
Recently, I was listening to an NPR program on teen pregnancy. This teen mom said that her mother simply told her not to have sex and not to bring home any babies. Well, that worked out just fine.
I don't know about other parts of the country, but southern parents have a habit of saying things like "because I said so." They don't believe children need an explanation for why something is wrong. So, what do you think is going to happen when the child is an adult and has no one to tell them, "Because I said so"? They're going to do what they want, and the only people around to punish them will be the criminal justice system.
