Good morning all,
Just curious for all the Degree forum readers and posters:
If you earned a BA or BS Degree, which NEW career path opportunities did that open up for you where you had no experience in that career/job beforehand?
Hopefully this can be an encouragement thread for those aiming to achieve that goal of a BA/BS so they can see what doors can open once it’s achieved.

I needed a master's to make that happen for me, so I used my BA to qualify for graduate school but I did add a side hustle as soon as my BA was conferred. I became a testing administrator through Bob Jones University - it's an indy / concierge side business. I did initially so I could administer my own children's standardized exams, but I have a nice little client file of families that I administer for each spring.
I know that's not exactly what you were looking for, but my masters has opened every door I've knocked on.

I've done a lot of jobs. Before I graduated with my bachelor's degree, I was a security supervisor. I worked as a law enforcement dispatcher while working on my first masters degree; my bachelor's degree was used to substitute for the experience requirement. Since then, I've been a substance abuse counselor, college instructor, parole officer, social services worker for a family protective services department, career training counselor, and tax enforcement officer. I have multiple degrees, but the BA in Social Science from TESU has consistently landed me jobs. I was also a corrections officer, but that didn't require a degree.

I was hesitant about getting a degree at all, as my experience and IT certs usually floated me, and I really didn't want to deal with multiple years of sitting in a classroom learning stuff I already knew.
Then I got into my current position (level 2 it security engineer). When I asked my boss what I needed to get promoted to level 3, he told me a degree.
After a bit of research, I found this board, which has been immensely helpful. Hopefully I'll be able to ask my boss about the promotion this coming week :-)

Does your company hire people with a degree but no experience?

That's interesting. You've been hired so many times. I have worked for only four companies, none of which I "applied" for. I was recommended to each job I've had from people I have either volunteered with or worked with previously. Back in the day, a high school graduate was all that was needed to do the first two jobs I did, the third job just required a certificate or diploma. And the last job required at least 5 years experience or more in addition to the equivalent of a diploma or associates.
My question to you is, did the ASNSM Biology or the AAS Environmental, Safety, & Security Technologies help you along the way to either a better job or further your education? I am looking into the same Masters at UF that you're taking, I don't have a BA/BS in Biology but I am thinking that the ASNSM + some UL Bio courses would hopefully be enough to get me in.
Oh, one more question, the BSBA CIS, did that open doors for you? If I recall correctly, none of the Associates/Bachelors that you took required a capstone course, but now the BA/BSBA do. The BSBA was the last to go for getting a degree by transfer and TECEP. I remember the good old days people under the 2011-2012 catalogs or earlier, could just transfer everything and use TECEP for residency, there weren't any capstones for the BA or BSBA either. I want them to bring that back so I can finish this BA Comp Sci faster! *cries*

The AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies has been useless for me, so I act like that degree doesn't exist. I haven't gotten a job because of the ASNSM in Biology, but there isn't much out there for people who only have associate's degrees in the sciences. I don't know if you saw my thread last year, but I switched from the Microbiology program to the Medical Sciences program at UF for two reasons: I have more of an interest in other sub-fields of biology, and I wouldn't have the laboratory experience to work in microbiology. A lot of my classmates were already working in labs, so it didn't matter to them. I might do Western Kentucky University's graduate certificate in biology since it's more general, but the medical sciences program at UF gives me the pathology background to work in public health. Really, I could probably get a job in epidemiology with the microbiology degree, but I would only know about diseases caused by pathogens.
I haven't been able to land any IT positions with the BSBA in CIS. I don't have any IT experience outside of my volunteering with the Civil Air Patrol, and I'm not willing to work for $10-$15 an hour as a tech support specialist. It's not something I can afford to do this late in life. I think my business degree will help me move up to more complex tax positions in my current state job since those positions prefer business-related degrees, but my current position doesn't have a preference.
Fortunately for me, I graduated with the BA before the liberal arts capstone and fell under an older catalog year for the BSBA allowing me to test out of the capstone. Kind of unrelated, but I recently found out that I qualify for the Associate Safety Professional certification test, and I'll be able to take the Certified Safety Professional test after passing. I got stuck in tax, but my desire is to work in public health, emergency management, or safety. I even came across a public health emergency management position that would be my dream job.
Are you wanting to switch fields, or do you want to study biology for fun?
