Hello -
I am moving along with my BS-IT degree at Excelsior. I have completed CLEP/DANTES to finish up the Arts and Sciences section, so all that is lift is the Information Technology Component.
I am hoping to test through as much as I possibly can. According to my evaluation I need a total of 36.00 credits in IT to include all of the following core requirements:
-Computer Architecture
-Database Concepts
-Data Communications and Networking
-Operating Systems
-Overview of Computer Security
-Project Management
I can do ICCP exams for Data Communication, Database Concepts, Project Management, and Computer Security. However, I get the impression that those exams are tough and hard to prep for.
I wouldn't mind taking online courses but I the Excelsior courses take SO LONG that they drive me crazy. It's also hard for me to find a proctor around here but that can be overcome.
Does anyone have ANY feedback about ways to get these credits complete?? If there is an online course that will let me go at my own pace instead of spending 16 weeks per course, that would be great!! Any advice appreciated, thank you!!

I don't know if they have exactly what you want, but Penn Foster and BYU are both self paced. Penn Foster is much cheaper, but you have to double check and make sure the course you want to take is ACE approved.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply! I have been looking at the PF website and wow is it confusing - they list the degrees but it's hard to drill down to the specific courses. From what I'm seeing, I don't see any of the IT core courses from Ece listed there!
Am I missing something ?

On this subject you would do well to use the search function. There have been quite a few threads on this subject. Most agree that it is a challenge to test out of the Excelsior IT degree.
This can get you started

Excelsior takes ACE approved courses including those from Penn Foster. To check and see if a course has received ACE approval start your search here.
ACE | National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training
Look up Penn Foster then search the courses.
When looking up specific courses, check to make sure that they are currently offered. That list contains all of the courses that ACE has ever approved including the retired ones.

To check on the Penn Foster courses you can first go to the ACE directory for the ACE approved courses.
ACE | National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training scroll down to Penn Foster click Search. You will get 5 pages of their courses that are ACE approved.
Click on the individual course and it will give the description. You will want to look at Credit Recommendation. They will need to be atleast 2 credits to satisfy the requirements of Excelsior.
There are also TECEP test that can satisfy some of the requirements.
Athabasca has courses that also might satisfy your requirments of being self paced. For example COMP378 - Database Management should satisfy Database Concepts and the course has 3 tests that are open book, 1 project, and one proctored final. They probably have other courses to meet the others also.
The Network+ test from Comptia might satisfy the requirment for Data Communications and Networking. It did for me towards the MIS degree thru Excelsior.
edit: Geezer beat me, I am a slow typer... lol
