Guidance for a continuing student

I don't know about UCD, but I petitioned a lot in college. So many a really heartfelt petition regarding your plan moving forward would help move some roadblocks. Also, most schools have a design your own degree program that you might be able to use. For example my AS is in "Selected Studies", but is actually a nursing degree. When I went back to finish my general ed they no longer offered AS in nursing on that campus. I didn't want to switch, so I settled for the design your own degree, but clearly my focus was nursing. You might be able to do something similar focusing only on the engineering stuff that you like and avoiding the transfer into another program.

I'm local (19 years in Davis, now in Woodland) if you want to gather some info,meet and talk about it. I'm also very old so I've seen a lot of people get through college without following the path most people take

As far as returning to UCD, I am locked into the same major (Materials Science) if I return and if I take only two classes a quarter it'll take me another two years to graduate with a degree I don't want to use. I will open up a dialogue with them and see if there are any other options, but that is the answer I got last Spring. STEM courses having a deadline is a good reminder, thank you. I know I have a relatively short amount of time to get this sorted out and I'm hoping I haven't waited too long. As far as general ed I already finished everything I could at the community college level and got my associates in engineering (that's where the 3.7 came from). Given what you've all said I think testing is sadly not an option that will get me where I want to go. I also intend to open a dialogue with Sacramento State, as they have an Elecrical and Electronic Engineering program that sounds very interesting.

Specifically, does HIS university disallow a second bachelor's degree? If so, let's pull in the proof and then we'll go from there. I can work with proof- I don't have time this morning to look this up myself.

Once he gets the BA from anywhere, it's effectively over. This type of petition is almost always denied, given the lack of funding for higher education in California. A report came out yesterday saying that out-of-state applicants have less stringent admission standards due to higher tuition paid by OOS. Public universities in CA need money.

Go look at SFSU, SJSU, UC Berkeley, UCLA yourself. I'm not providing links for those. You can get those yourself. They hate 2nd bachelor's all over California. There are oddball exceptions (eg. nursing as career changer), but taxpayers don't want to fund 2nd bachelors.

In that case, the options are less. Still, in your shoes, I'd be doing something.... you could do a full bachelors at one of the big 3 minus a single class, finish your UCB, submit for graduation, and then finish the second BA/BS immediately (simultaneously?). It's a lot to think about. Mainly, I hope you can just make all of this work without losing too much money, credit, or time.

I haven't approached UCD with a heartfelt petition, but I'm not really sure what I'd petition for. I already asked verbally to switch majors and was denied. They will probably let me back in as an open campus student to finish what I started, but that has its own can of worms in the form of a weird part-time student for scholarships and financial aid. I wanted to go on to grad school afterword so that may be a silver lining of slogging through my past mistakes. As far as the similar occupations go I have the requirements for basically any of them with the glaring exception of a healthy GPA. The 1.7 may be under/overstated as I am not actually sure without looking at my transcript (I still owe the college due to the aforementioned pit of depression). I'm taking steps to remedy that too, but it will take some time. For the first time in months I feel like I have a clear head and am ready to correct my mistakes.

On a totally unrelated note I find all of the signatures sort of intimidating as well as reassuring. All of these exceptionally knowledgeable people are happily throwing their wisdom my way and I deeply appreciate it. Thank you all.

If you were/are receiving care for your depression, you should also approach the Student Disability Center. They may be able to help you with resources you aren't aware of. They can definitely help when you're actively taking classes. They can get you accommodations like extra time to take tests and tutoring.
