Grad School help needed
#1
Folks, I'm in need of getting an education to have a productive discussion with son. Though only 18, he will graduate in May with AS in Business from local CC and BA in History from TESC. (yeah!)

His plans are to apply to AF Officer Candidate School in 2-ish years when his age is more in line with his peers. In the mean time, he'd like to complete a Graduate program in Political Science or related field.

How do you narrow down the choices? We've looked at AMU and WNM just from searching previous posts (thanks Jennifer!), Graduate School & Graduate, MBA, PhD Programs & Degrees - GradSchools.com and GetEducated.com | Review, Rate, Rank & Compare Online Colleges & Degrees but is there a better way than hunt and peck?

Online courses work well for him, but What factors do you look for in a school?

Is financial aid available for grad school? Scholarships? He is working part-time and will be covering the bill, so cost is a factor.

Thanks for all your help up to this point! Couldn't have done it without ya!

Wow - grad school at 18! You must be so proud!

I'm sure that everyone here looks for different things, but here's some of the things that I have looked for.

Interest - does the program excite me? Don't want to spend the next two years of my life on something that I don't like.
Cost - There are 100k + graduate programs out there. I don't want to pay off debt for the rest of my life. (Ok... if I could get into Harvard, then maybe)
Testing - Are they ok with the fact that my transcript is 80% CLEP/DSST?
Pre-requisites - Will I have to take a year's worth of classes just to meet the entry requirements?
Name and/or Accreditation Ok, let's be honest about this one. It's VERY important to me to go to a fully accredited school, but the name is not important. However, in looking at graduate schools, I did give a higher preference to schools that actually have B&M buildings, even though I plan on doing online classes. I would not rule out a school that is 100% online such as U of Phoenix, but would only consider if I found a perfect program that I couldn't get elsewhere or the program was extremely cheap.

Those are the only factors I can think of right now. Interest is at the top of my list because it was the most important to me, but you may have other priorities.

AMU would be a serious contender for me. They're well recognized in the military circles (obviously) and many officers pursue graduate degrees from them so it would be another check in the box in terms of his career progression. Their tuition isn't too bad either.

I'm not sure if this route is still viable. If you hear otherwise, do give a shout. But here is what is on the military forum:

ROTC/OTS - Topic Powered by Social Strata

"As of November 2009 any ROTC applicant that already possesses a Bachelor degree will be immediately directed to an OTS recruiter. Age isn't the problem, but having a degree is. I don't want to tell you not to apply for OTS, but as of now they are really looking for individuals with technical degrees or medical professionals."

Thanks for the confirmation ... at this point, this is my recommendation to him. If you have any other insights (scholarships, financial aid, etc) please do post.

FYI, I've been a student at AMU/APUS for about a year and it's been a good experience. One or two of the profs have been annoying but the school itself is fantastic to work with. I highly recommend it.

I've got a family member that's an AF officer. I might be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure they have an online master's program. With the min. entry age for OTS being 18, why not do it now if that's what he really wants? Being 18 and having a degree is a massive competitive advantaged.
