Grad School Admission
#1
Now that I'm almost done with my BSLS, I've started contemplating grad school and the universities I've looked at so far (York, Toronto, Ryerson and Fort Hays) do require anywhere from one to three recommendation letters.

I have been out of touch with my former profs. in over 15 years and I've completed (well, almost completed) my degree via testing out, now I'm wondering how do I go about getting recommendation letters? Could I perhaps try my EC academic advisors, or ?

Has anyone else here had to deal with a similar situation? Your input is highly appreciated.

Maybe you can read over the their respect sites once more. A lot of schools require the recommendations to be from some relating to academics HOWEVER if you have been out of school for a while, or don't have the means to provide those recommendations then some schools allow recommendations from past employers. I advise you to call Admission's to see if they will allow that.

Actually I just did this year (April or so). Fort Hays was one of them. In my case, I am pretty old and most of my professors were dead! I told the universities this and asked if I could use my supervisor and colleagues for references. They said fine. I applied to two universities and was accepted to both.

Good luck!

My grad school letters were all written by employers of mine. Just be sure you find people who will write the best letters possible. Pick carefully. Other ideas:

Directors, leaders, coordinators, advisors, managers, etc from jobs, volunteer activities, clubs, etc. Anywhere that you might be a shining star is better than somewhere that you're the average Joe. If you are a shining star as a local Junior Achievement advisor- that says something, even though it isn't academic or work related.
Also, average Joes get into college every day. Smile
