Hello all once again. This site is a Godsend for people like me who are grinding away at the CLEP/DSST/ECE exams in the pusuit of their degree. I have 76 credits/3.75 GPA under my belt, as far as Excelsior is concerned, and need 10 more tests to get my degree. I have taken the following tests in the last 5 weeks but have not received any scores yet:
Ethics in America (DSST) IC only
Ethics: Theory and Practice (ECE) IC only
Human Resource Mngt (ECE) IC Only
Drug and Alcohol Abuse (DSST) IC Only- I thought it was easy; being military probably helped with the alcohol portion of the test.........
Here is my future roadmap I worked out with my advisor:
World Pop
Abnormal Psych
Adult Aging
Gerontology
Humanities
Intro to Word Religions
Money and Banking
Management Info Systems
Civil War and Reconstruction
ECE's College Comp
and of course we can't forget the ever popular 1 credit Information Literacy  .
My goal is to take a test a week as it's worked so far for the tests taken, I feel I at least passed them; though time will tell. This method keeps me focused/motivated to keep my face in the study material, otherwise I would procastinate.
I have found many resources and study guides from the advice posted by others but I still have some concerns over World Pop and ECE's College Comp. I did take the CLEP 6 credit English test, with absolutely no study, and got an A, is the ECE test similar/are there essay questions? For some reason Excesior won't accept it the CLEP score for the English requirement.
I wish IC would come up with a study guide for World Pop as it seems to be one most people take. Short of that happening, I guess I'll go to the library and see if Week's book is available and actually study a text book argggg! I have also downloaded the terms associated with the test to familiarize myself with the lingo used. Any other sugestions? I went to the CIA site but was a little overwhelmed with where to start and what to research. Further feedback would be great.........
I wasn't too concerned with my GPA until I got my eval back, now I'd like to keep it up for the diploma. Either way, just to get this hurdle out of the way will be a huge load off my shoulders. I retire soon from the military (24 years) and need this to make myself more marketable in the civilian sector. I already have an Associates in Aviation Maintenance but from the job searches I've seen one needs a 4-year degree to open those doors.
Thanks to all who have written back on their testing experiences, keep them coming as they are more valuable than you will ever know. More to come as the test results come in. Lee

It looks and sounds as though you are well on your way to completeing your degree and have a plan mapped out to your particular strengths. A test per week is for me quite ambitious but only you can truly measure your exam taking abilities - I know you will succeed!!
GOOD LUCK!!

Hi Lee,
Congratulations on your 3.75 GPA. If you can keep it up there, you could graduate from Excelsior "Magna Cum Laude". Cool!
Regarding the World Population exam: I haven't taken this exam myself, but I took notes from other people's comments over time. I didn't make a note of who made the following comments, so unfortunately I can't give them due credit.
Here are the two specific files that they recommended. They got an 'A' using ONLY these two sources:
http://www.prb.org/pdf/PopHandbook_Eng.pdf
http://www.prb.org/pdf05/05WorldDataSheet_Eng.pdf
Here is a basic rundown of their additional comments:
- Know most of the terms in the glossary at the end of the handbook.
- Know how to figure fertility rates and birth rates. There weren't many math problems, but you do need to know what factors are part of these rates (total population vs. women 15-49).
- Know the phases of the demographic transition and at what phases you'll see certain fertility rates, mortality rates, economic factors. There were at least 15 questions that had something to do with demographic transition, maybe more.
- Know how urbanization plays into population growth.
- I had probably 5-6 questions on Malthus, who is not covered in the materials I listed, so I had no idea who he was.
- There were probably another 4 questions on some of the other theories. - There were a few questions on trends in China's and India's populations, trends on "sub-Saharan" Africa, a few on US population trends.
- Know something about migration and what factors lead people to migrate.
- Know how women's economic and educational successes factor into fertility rates.
I hope this helps you out a little bit more.
Best of luck,
Snazzlefrag

Lee,
First of all, WELL DONE on getting through all those tests, and best of luck to you on getting through your remaining tests!
I wanted to ask you...do you recall how long it took for Excelsior to get your evaluation back to you once they had your transcripts? I have heard that it can take awhile, so I was just wondering what your experience was.
I have sent in my transcripts for my own evaluation and am anxious to see what Excelsior accepts and doesn't accept (especially the Algebra class I took).
Thanks, and keep up the good work! hilarious

JoAnne,
First off, thanks for the words of encouragement, we all need them from time to time.
After Excelsior finally received all of my transcripts, it only took them about two weeks to get the eval back to me. They advertise that it can take 6-8 weeks so patience may be in order; I may have just been lucky or it may not be a peak time for them.
Good luck to you as well; may your credits be accepted and your goals towards your degree reached. Lee

Haha!!
I actually had to visit the campus (7 Columbia Circle office building) in order to get mine. I had submitted my eval info and waited around the 6-8 week period and heard nothing. I happened to go to Lake George on vacation during that time and drove down to Albany to EC to check on it.
Here's the kicker - they hadn't even started on my eval so an advisor completed it with me - there in a lobby office. It only took around 30 minutes (out of 6-8 weeks) plus a personal visit to get them started.
Fortunately things have been much faster and efficient ever since.

Lee,
Thanks for the feedback and kind words - I really appreciate it! I'm hopeful that my experience in getting my eval. will be close to yours (i.e., 2 weeks), as I'd like to know as soon as possible what my exact "game plan" is going to be for the tests I still need to take.
Take care!
