I know this is from another thread, but I wanted to post it in it's own thread because I feel it is important. I have worked as a community college teacher for 17 years now, and this is an issue that students just don't understand. First- here is what I wrote to another poster:
Technology (aka career or also called applied technology) credits like: information technology, computer technology, CAD, medical technology, nursing, culinary arts, agriculture, child development, HVAC, rad tech, environmental, paramedic, equestrian, dental hygienist, and literally 1000's of other college classes that gave college credit from regionally accredited institutions are NON TRANSFERABLE except as electives into BA programs.
Colleges frequently lump these programs in with AA classes, and it would be highly unlikely that a young person would know the difference. It is one of my soap box issues- buyer beware.
So, if you are taking classes locally with the intent on earning a BA somewhere- big 3 or any university- then you need to watch for classification of credits. Especially if you are not enrolled and don't access to an advisor (not an advisor at your current college- advisor of where you want to graduate from).
Classes that appear in these degree programs will likely not transfer into your BA (or come in as an elective- exceptions apply)
Associate of Applied Technology AAT
Associate of Applied Science AAS
Associate of Occupational Science AOS
(business classes as part of the above degrees will generally not transfer)
Associate Degree of Nursing ADN*
Associate of Science in Nursing*
Associate of Science AS**
*these can have many science transfer courses, but nursing credits will be electives.
**too many variables for generalization- could go either way
