Questions About Business School
#1
OK, so you guys know I graduated two weeks ago with my BA in History. Now, I pretty much have decided to take this year off and pursue other endeavors, but I am checking into business or law schools for next year. But for now, I have some business school related questions you could probably answer.

First of all, how math intensive were your classes? My major only required Intermediate Algebra, and I didn't go much beyond Introductory Statistics. The GMAT has a section for Quantitative Analysis, and it looks largely logic based, but it also seems to be calculus level math.

I have about fifteen business credits in my history degree, including six in Financial and Managerial Accounting. Within the month I will probably be taking a course in investment banking. So while I admit I am rusty when it comes to higher math, I can do fine in business related math.

Come to think of it, that is about the only question I have for now.

The local CC to me requires Intro to Statistics as a math requirement before getting into Accounting 101. They then require these as gen ed electives:

MAT 110 - Finite Mathematics 3 credits + or
MAT 113 - College Algebra 3 credits + or
MAT 115 - Precalculus 5 credits + or
MAT 120 - Introduction to Applied Calculus 3 credits +
NAT SCI - Bio/Natural Sciences (G.Ed.) 4 credits

So basically you have to take one of those courses(based on your skill level)+ a 4 credit Bio/Nat Sci Elective by the end of your second year to qualify.

You should check the requirements/speak to an advisor from the school that you plan to obtain your degree from though, it could be completely different

I think the only answer has to be...it depends. My WGU MBA had minimal math of any sort. I'm sure however that you can find other schools that expect a great deal more quantitative analyses than others. I would add that business math has always engaged me quite a bit more than general algebra or statistics, I like finding answers to real or simulated problems that can be applied to a real world problem...but I loathe the mixing of numbers and letters for their own sake.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

See, it's the same way with me. I took a course in Personal Finance, and for the most part I enjoyed the Financial Accounting course (Managerial Accounting, not so much). I understand and enjoy the relation of balance sheets vs. income statements and statements of cashflow. I just saw the math on the GMAT quantitative analysis section, and it got me wondering.

I'm looking at Norwich University's MBA programs, and it looks very impressive. I even found myself intrigued by their M.A. in Diplomacy.

Also, Villanova University delivers both an MBA and MPA online. That's another possibility.
