For-Profit Colleges: Good Choice or Bane of the Education World?
#11
I've taken 2 grad courses through American Pubic University (SANANTONE!!!) and begin my 3rd in a couple of weeks. So far I've been very pleased with the material and have had no problems with financial aid. So APU/AMU I personally would recommend, depending upon what your goal is. Mine is to teach, at the high school level for now and hopefully at the community college one day. If I wanted to teach at the university level , to be honest I wouldn't get a masters from APU or any other for-profit. There's just too much bias against such schools in traditional academia so why hinder your job prospects? In such a scenario a couple of courses taken at APU/AMU and then transferred to a traditional program isn't a bad idea, maybe even doing a grad cert and then transferring. Since I might teach at a CC one day, I'm probably being unnecessarily cautious but I myself am going to do as I would if I wanted to teach at a university (which I don't). I'm seriously thinking about finishing a grad cert in Ancient & Classical history thru APU (I really really like the material) and then transfer to University of Nebraska-Kearney for an MA in history (mostly in American history). Were I planning on staying at the public school level I'd just finish a degree at APU.

Btw, there may be some exceptions but in general I'd advise everyone to avoid UoP and DeVey like the plague...
