Focused on Law
#1
Hello, my name is Michael, I joined instacert because my mom thought it'd be helpful for me.

I'm as some would say a gifted student, I exceed in test scores, but lack discipline in homework and general class work. Since I could read, I've been enticed by novels, I like getting lost in the stories I read. I have a photographic memory, and was tested in third grade for learning disorders, in which they found, that, I did have a learning disability, I hated attending school, and I would figure that exact amount of questions I'd need to answer correctly on a test to pass, and the exact amount of assignments I'd have to turn in, in order to pass the class, the rest of the assignments I wouldn't do.

If I'm not challenged, I wont do the work, it is quite frustrating, but that is just how I am. But back to the topic at hand.

I want to be a lawyer, one that generally works with businesses, and the music industry. I'm personally into music, I own a studio, and record/produce all my own music.

I know what I want to do, but I do not have the means to do it, I ask humbly for your help, any study guides, or books in particular that I should read, in order to go through my classes most efficiently would be more than satisfactory and appreciated.

If you know of all the books I'd need in order to go through the classes, and if its not too much trouble, can you compile a list for me, so I can either rent them, or purchase them, as soon as possible.

If I focus, I can get my bachelors in 2 years, instead of 4, but I'd really need some help from all or some of you here on Instacert. From the topics that I've been reading, it seems like a lot of you are more then helpful and you all work together to help one another, which shows that even in these current economic times, there are still people who put aside salary differences, and discrimination, all for the bettering of each individuals future.

I am 18 years old, with still a lot left to learn, but with your help, I'm sure these coming years will be more then gentle on my goal achieving and aspirations.

Thank you :-)

Hi Michael. Welcome to the forum.

As far as what books to buy, well, that depends upon what courses you plan to take. Thomas Edison, Excelsior, and Ohio U's exams are very specific as to what textbooks are recommended, and the exam information at the schools' websites details what texts will be needed. DANTES and CLEP exams are far more general, so you can pretty much use anything relevant.

As far as which exams to take, that will depend upon the degree itself that you want. Do you want a liberal arts degree, or do you want a business degree? It's fine if you haven't decided yet; you've got plenty of time. Regardless of the degree you choose, you'll still have general education requirements. These will vary depending upon the school and the program you choose, but expect to need around 9-12 credits each of humanities, of social sciences/history, and of natural sciences/mathematics. Plan on needing 3-6 credits of freshman composition, as well. Most colleges will allow you to download a copy of the school's catalog, which will provide details regarding their specific requirements.

The trick, in my opinion, is to study for exams that interest you. Your interests will change as you go through the program, so just find something that intrigues you now and study for it. Once you've taken that exam, you'll probably find that a new course has caught your attention, so move on to it next.

Well I know that I want business as my major. As I stated, I'm in the music industry, and have had offers for record deals, and production deals, and the such. But I denied them, because I want to know whats going on BEHIND the music itself, I can write quality verses all day long, but production wise, I'd like to know whats happening to my voice, and what exactly there doing. So I took up my own studio, and became the CEO of MY music.

Same goes with Law, I want to be able to read my contracts, and read other peoples contracts, and know exactly whats going on. I want to defend artists who are signed under unworthy contracts that are abusing their rights, and taking away the passion behind the music. I'd also like to defend small businesses, and people who are truly innocent.

So my focus is on Business, and I'd like my minor to be something relevant to middle age history, anything relevant to middle age time, honor of the sword, strategic war with respect for the enemy as well as respect for their country and beliefs, I'm interested in. Also I'm located in Southern California, and will probably go to Mission College, or College of The Canyons, they both offer classes for 20 dollars each. But I'd like more information on how I can just study for the test, take it, and get the credits. Without having to attend classes for 6 months, THEN take a test, THEN get my grade, THEN get my credits. I'm a very strong test taker, and would prefer to take advantage of my abilities as best as humanly possible.

For Law School, I don't know where I'm going to attend, as my finances are very low, and they don't seem to be heading anywhere fast. So at the moment, I'm just focusing on getting my bachelors as soon as possible.

Thank you for your help, I really do appreciate it.
