No, they are not much more difficult; they both have a "less-than-rigorous" reputation. If you are looking for flat-out free free electives, you could take the Kaplan PLA (3 hours), the National Fire Academy ind. study (3), and the TEEX cybersecurity series (6). Those are all ACE-approved, so you would put them on an ACE transcript and have it sent to TESC.
Did I mention that what you have will work too? 
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

Once you complete the Kaplan course, you won't have to worry about taking TESC's introductory PLA courses which are $491 per credit hour under the Per Credit Tuition Plan. You need an introductory PLA course before you can submit a portfolio. TESC has free, non-credit versions of their courses. I'll post a link when I have access to a computer.

So I could take the Kaplan course and it would count as 3 elective credits and it would also fulfill the introductory PLA course requirement needed to submit a PLA for the UL History course I need? That sounds like a good way to kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks for all the replies so far. On a side note, does anyone know if I could appeal TESC's ruling of not accepting my HIS-101 credits because of the D grade I received? As I mentioned in my first post the notes on my academic evaluation say they rejected it because they only “accept courses with a grade of C or better into the major area of all degrees.” Has anyone ever tried to get any leeway on a similar situation in the past?

That admissions counselor said that I would pay $476 per credit hour instead of the flat fee. The senior admissions counselor said that I couldn't complete portfolios at all under that tuition plan. It was confirmed that I could submit portfolios under the Per Credit Tuition Plan, but the senior admissions counselor didn't confirm the fees. I'm assuming that Per Credit students pay what everyone else pays for the assessments (the PLA courses will still be $491 per credit hour). There is no system set up to pay for portfolio assessments by credit hour.

That is standard policy. If the course was taken at TESC you will need to repeat. if not, you should be able to replace easily with the CLEP exam or Straighterline course. When you pass the exam/course, I would place a call or email the Evaluations Team and let them know your intentions so when the transcript arrives they will change the D course to duplicate 0.00CR. It will then shift down to the other courses section.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to take an UL online course like one of these - History Courses - Distance Learning - Extended Studies - Adams State University - for the $495 + fee for 3 credits then transfer those credits to TESC rather than take an UL History course through Saylor and then PLA that in to TESC?

The first 12 credits through portfolio assessment is $363 total. Every 6 credits thereafter is $206. You don't have to take TESC's PLA courses, but I advise that you read through them to learn how portfolios are supposed to be formatted. Saylor courses are free.

Ok understood. Is it a pain to put together a portfolio assessment based on one of these Saylor courses? I keep reading about people's negative experiences with portfolio assessment's in general.
