Financial Aid
#1
I was talking to someone in the Financial Aid Office in my grad school yesterday and she told me that even though the first 2 years in grad school will be getting a 2nd bachelor's I won't be able to get a PELL grant because I already have a 1st bachelor's... Does that make sense? I always thought that as long as I'm not learning for a master's I can still get financial aid...and I got my bill for next year and it says an estimated amount of TAP I will get for next year. Why would TAP give financial aid for 2nd bachelor's and not PELL?

My brick and mortar school "cracked down" on who receives financial aid and their distribution this year. Now they will only pay for classes in your relevant degree program, so I have to change my program every semester to complete the classes I need to transfer to a different 4 year college. Total pain.

Anyways, since this crackdown, I've learned more about Pell than I ever wished to. The short answer, is no, if you are trying for your second BA/BS, you are not eligible for Pell, because it is a grant and not a loan. You would be eligible for federal LOANS however.

Eligibility of Students on a 2nd Bachelor’s Degree Course for the Pell Grant | Pell Grants
CLEP: Sociology - 58 | Biology - 65 | College Composition (w/essay) - 61 | College Mathematics - 70

DSST: Environment & Humanity - 69 | Lifespan Developmental Psychology - 62 | Here's To Your Health - 440

BS - Maternal Child Health 12/2012 - Union Institute and University
Mulling over going for my MA/PhD in Sociology.....

Then why can I get TAP? What's the difference between TAP and PELL?

Purpleteen,
Hi, TAP is from your state (I assume you are in NY), which is free to set its own standards and requirements for the grant monies it provides, while Pell is federal. I believe Pell has had this rule at least since the 90's when I originally started college. You can't get Pell grants if you already have an undergraduate degree.

Hi I'm just so excited so I decided to post it here: I got a 13k grant from my school because of my GPA so I don't need to pay a penny for the first semester!! And I only need to pay 4k for second semester instead of another 13k!!! :hurray:
