Finally started ALEKS
#1
I have been procrastinating so badly on my Middle East and Environment and Humanities tests that my husband suggested today that I skip them for now and move on to something else. So I logged into ALEKS and did an assessment. Scored a whopping 4%, @@ But am finding so far that getting through the topics usually only requires one "explain" click and 3 practice questions. Not too bad. A lot of it I knew, but with math it seems I have to be reminded. Hoping it won"t take me too too long to get through it.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you chose ALEKS over SL, CLEP, or DSST? Math is the only thing I don't have planned out yet, and I'm leaning toward CLEP College Math. Just wondering what your motivating factors were.

I know for me my anxiety over taking math tests would be through the roof, so I liked ALEKS because I can go can my own pace and pick up where I left off even if I was in the middle of an evaluation. Math isn't my best subject so I need something that's as low pressure as possible. Plus the price was right for $20/month and the grade gets banked at ACE. Straighterline costs more plus you need the textbook (at least that's what it seemed like people were suggesting in the forums).

The cost and self paced nature are big draws. Straighterline certainly has it's place, and the College Math CLEP can be a better choice for some. Depends on the goal and the test taker.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

For me it was exactly as af2012 said. I scored so badly on my Math placement test in CC that I had to take 2 remedial semesters of math before I could take the required class, which I didn't take because I moved and for one year was in limbo as an out of state residents in 2 states, lol. Even in math class, I went home and did my homework on a Tuesday after class, then went to tutoring on Thursday before class to go over my homework, and looking at my homework, I could swear someone forged all my work. I couldn't remember anything I had done, even though my work was there in my own handwriting. I can't imaging studying on my own and then taking a test. I also looked into a college class now that I'm in-state, but the textbook alone was $22. ALEKS just seemed like the best choice for me.
I'm actually having my 15 year old son do an assessment and start ALEKS today because he failed math this year. I'm hoping it will keep some math in his head over the summer, and maybe get him to a point where he can have a better base of understanding to start from in his class. Depending on how well he does, or how far he progresses, I may even ask the school if they will grant credit and allow him to move on....
