Finally Received Evaluation from TESC BALS - More questions now than Answers..
#1
I am satisfied with the evaluation thus far, but I have some questions that for some reason my adviser could not answer. She literally said "Hmmm I am not sure, hold on a second while I.." And the phone hung up. I tried calling back with no luck, but I know you guys tend to have more information than some advisers.

My goal is to finish all test and enroll for capstone in December. (Are the classes at TESC full semester/ self paced/ or accelerated)? Would love to knock it out as fast as possible.

I am having some difficulty with testing as in which ones to take and will fit properly. I know that in a BALS mainly social science / math-natural science / and Humanities work. But I keep stumbling on post where some say you can use other area test that wont fall into free elective like Dantes: Human Resource Management - Principles of Supervision or CLEP: Principles of Management and Marketing. Is this true from those with experience trying?

When it comes to Fema I understand TESC does not put out a list. I have take more than enough (got bored) but not sure if they are the right ones. How do you obtain an accurate list. Email someone at tesc? or Is it online?

Looking at my evaluation would any of you guys do anything different as in: a different degree my credits would fit better in, or school? Are my planned test utilized correctly and efficiently?

And finally:
I plan to finish taking my last test Nov 30th or the 1st week in Dec at the latest. Due to time constraints and needing a degree by a certain time I am unable to take classes at the moment. However I am interested in going to Graduate school eventually. What would you guys rate as the best online school to obtain an accredited Masters.

I'll answer some of your questions as they show up below...

My goal is to finish all test and enroll for capstone in December. (Are the classes at TESC full semester/ self paced/ or accelerated)? Would love to knock it out as fast as possible.

The capstone is offered each month and can be done as "guided study" or "online" both are online but the first one might be your option if you wish to complete it faster. Both give 12 weeks but that course centers around a single really long paper so you can probably finish either one early. Check out: Thomas Edison State College: Secondary Category Landing Page

Only courses listed as Humanities, Social Sciences, or Math/Nat Sci are able to be general education courses. Courses like HRM, Supervision, Mgmt, or Mktg are all business courses and will be Free Electives on a BA in Liberal Studies.

When it comes to Fema I understand TESC does not put out a list. I have take more than enough (got bored) but not sure if they are the right ones. How do you obtain an accurate list. Email someone at tesc? or Is it online?

Search this site, there are lists lingering around. Otherwise you can email TESC and they should help you if you are enrolled. Email enrolled@tesc.edu if you have paid the enrollment fee and include your degree and student ID.

And finally:
I plan to finish taking my last test Nov 30th or the 1st week in Dec at the latest. Due to time constraints and needing a degree by a certain time I am unable to take classes at the moment.
There are tons of online master's programs, I'm looking for one myself and find TESC costs more than many of them. Someone else can probably help on this.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

I answered your questions in a separate post but here are my thoughts on your eval.

I agree with everything but what is listed below:

B: Upper Level Degree requirements options – 6/15 Credits
1. REL-405-DE Intro to World Religions 3 UL Credits (DANTES)
2. SOS-305-DE Substance Abuse - 3 UL Credits (DANTES)

Planned:
3. PSY-361-DE Organizational Behavior - 3 UL Credits (DANTES)
4. HIS-309-DE An Introduction to the Modern Middle East – 3 UL (DANTES)
5. COU-262-DE Fundamentals of Counseling - 3 UL (DANTES)

`
Counseling is not a general education elective and therefore cannot be used here. It is also a 200 level course and not UL credit.

C. Lower Level Degree requirements options – 6/15 Credits
1. World Lit 2 – 3 Credits - CC
2. Analysis & Interpretation – 3 Credits – DSST

A & I Lit is a CLEP exam and is six credits not 3.

FREE ELECTIVES: 9/27
1. Semester Hours in Physical Conditioning - 2 Credits - Army
2. Marksmanship - 1 Credit Army
3. First Aid - 1 Credit - Army
4. Military Sciences - 2 Credits – Army
5. H ED 1320 - Conc Lifetime Health/Fitness - 3 Credits – CC
+ 18 Fema Credits

If you had an eval done then which Fema credits did they count? If you haven't sent them the Fema transcript you should do that to see what fits. You can always send another transcript later (still free) and that way you'll know for sure where you're at.

Overall you're in great shape on the planning of the degree, get some more tests done and you'll have the degree before you know it!

Thanks for all the info!! The guided study option sounds great for the capstone.

I was under the impression COU-262-DE Fundamentals of Counseling can be planned in as psy311 with success from a few. I will definitely look into that and review possible options to replace.

They put the first 3 credits from A&I in the humanities section and the other 3 in area study. Not sure why. I assume they just go down the line from the looks of things.

Just finished the fema credits a couple days ago so I should see that added in a week or 2..or 3.

Any specific schools for a Masters grabbed your attention yet?

I've read the same about getting counseling matched but unless you can get them to match it up front (by planning it in) my choice would be to use something guaranteed to work. On A & I Lit, they will split things up like that sometimes so that is normal. On the Master's, I've begun to look locally (here in Minnesota) since I'm finding it to be cheaper and probably look better on my resume (not that TESC is a problem but some others might be). I realize that I can do a program online anywhere but when I'm finding a communications degree program (which TESC doesn't have in a masters) available locally and it is cheaper I almost can't resist. I'm looking at Online Masters in Communication - CSP. Depending on what master's degree you want you'll find a lot of choices. Keep it regionally accredited and you'll do great.

At least out of the Social Science and Psychology majors who have taken Fundamentals of Counseling in the past couple of years, we have all had it transcribed as PSY 331.

I'm not surprised that the advisor hung up on you because it happened to me after she answered my questions wrong (which included a question about Fundamentals of Counseling). It's best to just email.

If you have not paid the enrollment fee and actually are a student of the college, you are not going to get any answers from advising. Pretty much the policy I ran into. Best of luck.
