I have been interviewing and hiring people for many years. Sometimes I may have numerous PHD's and Masters graduates who have to sit in front of me and try to sell me on their skills or abilities.
At the end of the day the only person who even cares about their degree really would be my HR manager. When I receive a stack of resumes I also ask to be sure people where not screened out because of a bias towards a particular degree or school pedigree. What I want and need is the best candidates based on ability and skill. Also with most complex tasks they cannot be learned in school, and school can only give me a glimpse of your ability to retain the information from the training I will provide. My successes has always been my ability to find people who have the drive, and abilities to help me fulfill a successful project not show off with a fancy degree. I have spent allot money grooming people with all levels of education, and yet some of my best performers only have a Associates degree. They currently make over 6 figures, and none of the MBA's or PHD's even care. Why? simple they get the job done. You must have confidence in yourself, and understand your degree only fulfills a possible checkbox, and it does not define you.

What a great and accurate post Vetvso. I've been in my field for going on 20 years now and I have had the same experience. A degree from a top institution is valuable, however It is the person behind the degree and their internal drive to succeed that matters the most.
I'm so happy to see someone express this viewpoint. |
