Just received an e-mail from TESC updating their policies on FEMA courses. I know they were popular a while ago, and I even took a couple for my free credits.
Effective immediately, the acceptance of FEMA Independent Study courses for credit at Thomas Edison State College is indefinitely suspended pending further review of those courses.
Students with documented approval to use FEMA Independent Study courses as part of their degree program prior to March 5, 2014 will have those approvals honored but must submit their official FEMA transcript with all approved courses listed as complete to Thomas Edison State College by June 30, 2014.
Students with previously evaluated transfer credit from FEMA Independent Study courses accepted and applied to their academic record at Thomas Edison State College are not affected by this change. Those evaluated credits remain part of their permanent record and may, where appropriate, be used in fulfillment of degree requirements.
Students with questions concerning how this policy change may impact their program of study should schedule an appointment with an academic advisor via the myEdison student portal or contact the Office of Advisement at academicadvising@tesc.edu. Please include "ATTN: Dr. Keel-FEMA" in the subject line.

For them to do this before the end of the academic year, I wonder if this is an accreditation issue.

Yeah, good point. That's what I was thinking since the email said "pending further review of those courses". I wonder what the chances are of them being accepted again. For people with large free electives sections of their degree plans, this is really bad news.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. It was far too easy to get credit for a year of college without really learning anything.

Hi There,
Just FYI, there seem to be two threads on this. I'm glad I have all my FEMAs done, TESC has received the transcripts, and they are all listed by name in my academic evaluation! I will call them tomorrow (they are closed now) to confirm that this won't effect me. Sheesh! Clep3705 might well be correct, but the same could be said of other online courses as well--which haven't been suspended. It would really be nice to know why this has happened.

Online courses offered by colleges require you to learn as much as you would on ground. The differences are usually between colleges, not mode of delivery. The FEMA courses were easy to pass by using the find function in the PDF file, but FEMA started switching their courses to an interactive slideshow. So, I wouldn't say you don't learn anything. You learn about emergency management. Emergency services agencies often require their employees to take the FEMA courses, especially NIMS.

These threads should have been titled RIP FEMA.
I'm proud of TESC, which is saying something because usually they just piss me off.
I'm glad they've done something which makes them more reputable, rather than the opposite.
Things are getting more competitive and good schools are trying to stand out and bad schools are going to get worse. It might hurt now, I will have to take a bunch more courses/tests than I had planned, but in the long run, I will be more proud of my degree and my school.
I have this horrible fear that I'm going to get my degree and TESC is going to end up a joke like UoP, but this has helped alleviate that fear a little bit.
Now I'll go cry in my beer because I only managed to complete 12 FEMA credits.
Maybe I will be applying for an AA after all.
Total Newb - Enrolled at TESC for AA, eventually going for BA Psych.
Thanks to everyone who provides such awesome information on this site, I'm slowly getting the hang of this crazy process.
