Calc 1 at TESC....very nervous
#1
So I have gibill and have to take actual classes at TESC. Has anyone taken Calc 1 or Stats via guided study/online? If so what resources did you find helpful?

Thanks!

I took Calc I ages ago during my B&M school days, but took Statistics STA-201 through TESC online. The only resource I used was the textbook and the course mentor. Look for Steve Stutz for the course mentor. I had a wide variety of course mentors in the various online and GS courses I took (business major), and I would rank him as tied for the number one slot in helpfulness, responsiveness, and knowledge. He emailed the class once a week with assignment due date reminders and his contact info to make sure everyone knew his schedule if we needed help understanding a concept, and was one of the fastest graders (I remember turning one assignment in at 2AM, and when I woke the next morning at 6AM for work, it had been graded). Grades came with comments, page references, and tips if you got something wrong so you knew what you needed to review (because like all maths, if you proceed into new material with flawed understanding of what went before, you'll be way off) so the prompt grading was beyond helpful.

I took both Statistics and Calculus I at TESC (Statistics was Guided Study, Calculus was Online). They were not easy courses. Both were reasonably intensive and required a lot of calculations. But if you are good at math and calculations, they should not be too much of a problem. The only resource I used was the textbook and some help from Smarthinking (an online tutoring service free for TESC students) for calculus. Smarthinking is a useful tool to help, especially because it is free (for TESC students). I am glad that mrs.b had a good experience with her mentor, because mine were not particularly helpful, my Statistics mentor took a long time to grade the assignments and exams, and my Calculus mentor was fine, although not very involved. Generally you are on your own in TESC courses.
