Excelsior or TESC which one is cheaper
#1
I really don't understand how they calculate their cost.

Base in your guy experiences. Which college have the cheapest cost?

geteducated.com claim that TESC for bachelor business is $25,880 (Others)
and Excelsior around $32000. Is that survey correct?

I have plan to take BS MIS or BS CIS, and I am not sure which college should I join. It seem that I will join excelsior, however it really depend on the cost. I don't have a lot of money.

Can somebody give me comparison about their cost

thank you

Everyone's total cost is different.

It depends on how they will complete their degree:
classes, testing out ( cleps, dantes, tecep's ece's , GRE (at excelsior you can earn credits for taking the GRE but you cant at TESC ) ,
FEMA credits ( accepted raw at TESC but not at Excleisior) , etc.

Cost will also depend on how many credits you need to complete, if you have any to transfer in or if starting from scratch.

Each school has set fee's which I believe you can find on their website.

If you are a resident of NJ then you will pay less at TESC then a non resident of NJ would. If you are a member of an organization that has a partnership with Excelsior , then you pay less per credit and have a reduced set of fees but you have to take a certain number of their classes to participate.

So there are just to many variable to answer your question.

I would suggest contacting each school and ask them to send you a catalog and reading through each and seeing if you can come up with the costs of each based on your specific criteria.

Furthermore, (can you tell that I have been practicing writing my Eng Comp 2 CLEP essays???...no one uses "furthermore" in a forum post! ) you have to take into account any special / reduced fee structures that you may have. As an example, I received some of the military reduction in my annual fees with TESC but then they hit me with huge TECEP test fees that are not listed anywhere on their web site. That changed my spreadsheet for expenses by quite a bit since I am taking 8 TECEP's. Be sure to really beat the full disclosure on all fees out of your advisor before you start so you do not have any sticker shock.

At Excelsior ( I believe these are the current figures)

$75 application fee
$895 Enrollment fee
$440 Annual service fee ( charged each year after the first year)
$495 Grad fee

$300 cost per credit hour:
so 120 credits x $300= $36,000

Of course the cost per credit hours and fees are subject to change (most likely in the upward direction) .

If you are taking only classes, there is no reason to pay $$$$ for 4 years at TESC. Take the first 90 credits at your community college then transfer. If you are willing to use FEMA classes, that is worth $5000 savings, and for every 30 CLEP/DSST credits you earn- is worth another $5000 saved. For every year that you are a student, it will cost you $2000, so finish in 1 year instead of 4 and save another $6000. I hope you get the idea. I can't imagine any reason on the entire planet that someone would go to TESC for all of their classes. TESC doesn't even offer that many classes- read the catalog carefully.

My degree (from zero credits) was TESC online classes, TESC TECEP exam, local transfer classes, FEMA, credit for courses taught, CLEP/DSST for gen eds, and completed in 18 months (only 1 year enrolled) We don't always talk about money on this board, but I would be shocked if anyone here spent more than $10K at TESC in all. I spent about half that.

Thank Peace123 and Jennifer for your advices. I am almost done with my AA with local college. Probably I will wait until I finish my AA before I can transfer to Excelsior

The requirements for the TESC BSBA CIS and Excelsior BS Business MIS are slightly different, and you will have to take this into consideration when figuring the final costs.

Excelsior requires that you take the Business Policy course from them, which adds another $895. You must also complete Operations Management, which means that you must either take an online course (CSU most popular choice) or attempt the TESC TECEP for around $450.

The business portion of the TESC BSBA degree can be entirely tested out of, so even though the enrolled tuition is greater than Excelsior, you can use CLEP's, DSST's, TECEP's and now Straighterline (for Managerial Accounting), to fulfill degree requirements.

The CIS/MIS requirements are also slightly different for each degree, so you need to scan each requirement and make an educated decision.

There are plenty of threads on this subject and each subset. Use the search function to dig a little deeper.

Good luck!

And even once you finish your AA there's still no need to register right away. Both schools will take 80-90 semester hours from a CC, plus more credits if you're testing out of anything. I'd map out my progress towards the degree (including figuring out required upper level credits) and then enroll at the last moment to keep from having to pay the yearly enrollment fees. If you need any input on the TESC CIS degree let me know, I completed it.
