I got a response from Excelsior about the
Capstone. In addition to paying for the
Capstone (any one know the price?) they
Suggested that I take Research and Writing.
Again how much?
I'm open to change but feel this may be a
cash grab. BTW is a capstone upper level?
A lot of us are going Excelsior on a very
tight budget

Yes the capstone is upper level (400 level). If the other course is "suggested" (like the capstone is at TESC) then I would blow it off. If you really want those credits there is an ECE for Research Methods or something like that.

The capstone course is required at Excelsior for students matriculating after (I think?) June 2010.
The research and writing in the major course is also required but I understand the faculty will waive it if the student submits a ~2000 word paper graded from an upper level course and written in an appropriate format (APA/MLA). This course/requirement is different to the research methods ECE which is a general stats and experimental design exam for the social sciences.

I'm currently enrolled in the COSC capstone. It officially starts today, but I was working on it this weekend.
I can't speak for EC, but the COSC course looks tough and not like a cash grab at all. From what I can tell, the big 3 (especially COSC) may have tightened up their requirements because they didn't want to accidentally graduate someone who is good at test taking, but can't cut it in a college class.
I didn't really want to do the Capstone (and I still don't really lol), but I can see the value in it. Especially since I am planning on doing my MBA online, this should really give me a good idea of whether or not I want to be doing this for the next two years of my life.

I agree there is more to school than testing. I hope there isn't
a demand for signing up for more classes at full price.

Ugh.. it is expensive. 800+ book so about 1000 or so just for three darn credits.
I can see the big 3 tightening up here or there, but I think that there is a limit. After all, the only reason all of us are forking over cash to EC, TESC, and COSC is because they have a generous CLEP/DSST policy plus no residency. If they change, we will all go elsewhere.
Not that I'm ashamed of a COSC diploma, but if I had to pay more money and spend a lot more time, COSC would not have been on the list of choices. So, yes it does benefit them to keep accepting our tests for a significant portion of the credits.

Yes.. the more I get into the capstone, the more I'm wishing I had chosen TESC lol. No, it's all good. I love COSC and I'm glad for the experience. I am starting to question whether the capstone helps you in the real world. I don't think it does, but I do think it helps prepare you for graduate school.
