I'm confused about credit for the CLEP English Comp exam at Excelsior. I'm aware the exam does not satisfy the writing requirement and I plan to take a 3 credit Excelsior exam which will meet the WER.
I have read a number of posts here reporting Excelsior doesn't award the full 6 credits for this CLEP exam and instead only approves of 3 credits. I'm wondering if this info is accurate. According to the Excelsior brochure, 6 credits are awarded for the CLEP English Comp exam after earning a score of 50 or better.
If you took and passed the CLEP English Comp exam and submitted your score to Excelsior, how many credits were you awarded?
On another note, given Excelsior doesn't allow this CLEP exam to meet the WER, why take the essay version? I understand the non-essay version has twice the questions however I'd rather get my score immediately than wait weeks with the essay version.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I'd be grateful for any insight and clarification.

I hear TESC will accept Freshman Comp w/essay?
Or try Amridge University, they will let you transfer in up to 90 or 99 units total,
Plus you will not have to take a Math or Algebra Class Just have to Science courses. They will will also accept CLEP W/O ESSAY for the english,
Downside: only 2-3 classes a semester at 4 units a whack!

Thanks for taking the time to reply BAT21. I appreciate your advice.
I plan to continue with Excelsior. I anticipate the CLEP English Comp exam will be accepted for 6 credits (as noted in their brochere) and plan to complete the WRE with another course.
Again, if anyone has completed the CLEP English Comp exam and submitted to Excelsior, I'd like to hear from them. Specifcally I'd like to know the amount of credit Excelsior granted.
Thank you.

Hi,
I had the same question a while back and after speaking with an Excelsior Advisor, she told me that the CLEP English Comp w/ Essay or the Freshman Comp w/ Essay will not satisfy the Written English Requirement. I know I also read the same thing in one of their publications. You will only get 3 hours towards Humanities. Hope this answers your question.

Thank you Clep 101 for taking the time to respond. I greatly appreciate your comments.
So that I'm clear, the Clep English Comp with essay earned you only 3 credits at Excelsior? Does this include the longer and reportedly more difficult English Comp without essay test?
It seems odd to me that the Excelsior brochure notes credit specifically for this exam as 6 credits. They are clear that the CLEP test doesn't meet the WER but I don't fnd any reduction noted for credit. I wonder if perhaps only 3 are credited to the humanities requirement while the remaining 3 are applied to electives?
Again, I am grateful for your advice with this.
Thank you.

I didn't take the English Comp with essay because I knew it wasn't going to satisfy the WER. I just took the Freshman Col. Comp w/ out essay. Even though it says 6 semester hours, Excelsior will only give 3. Just so you know, my buddy took both the CLEP English Comp and Freshman Col Comp and said they are pretty much the same thing. It's not that they are difficult, just that time will be your enemy on these exams. Hope you are a fast reader. I had like 30 questions left with 2 minutes remaining so I just bubbled all of them in just in time to get a passing score of 51.

First, you should talk to an Academic Advisor for the correct information, rather than relying on what people say on this board.
Second, the CLEP will not count towards the Written English requirement. You can take the Excelsior English Comp exam to meet the written English requirement. Excelsior will award you six (6) credits for a passing score. HOWEVER...how many of those credits apply toward your degree depends on what else you've done. In my case, I earned six credits but could only apply three towards my degree because I was filled up on everything lower level.
Each case is different, which is why you should speak to an advisor for the ground truth. And then study, because this is not a gimme by any means!

Thank SOLDAT. I'm taking the Excelsior college writing exam to meet the writing requirement. I should have room for credit at the lower level and hope to pick up the full 6 credits for the CLEP English Comp. Per your suggestion, I'm awaiting word from my advisor.
I appreciate your point about study. My approach has been to assume every exam is going to be the toughest yet and to prepare accordingly.
Quick question for you, if I may. InstantCert (which I just signed up for) suggests taking the Exam with essay included. They claim the longer exam version with no essay and with double the questions is a harder road. Do you agree or have any thoughts on this?
Thank you

When I took the English Comp CLEP, it was without essay. I studied for one night, took the exam, and nailed it. Six credits for a few hours study.
Skip forward five years. I review the rules/techniques of writing a five-paragraph essay and take a hard look at the Excelsior guidebook to see what I'm up against. I didn't practice writing any exams, study any IC flashcards, or review any other material. I took the Excelsior English Comp, which consists of three written essays, and squeeked by with a C. According to my grade sheet, I probably did "B" work on the first two essays and then fell apart on the last one (I was running out of time).
I have about ten CLEP/DANTES under my belt and an equal number of Excelsior exams. The Excelsiors are, without a doubt, much harder. I've never studied for more than a couple hours for a CLEP/DANTES and I scored an A on all but one. Most of the Excelsior exams take around ten hours of studying and I'm getting mostly B's and C's.
Talk to an advisor to make sure you don't waste your time taking an exam that won't count. Then study hard. If, like me, you don't care about your GPA and just need to finish the degree quickly, you can speed things up a bit. I've earned 30 upper-level credits in one month and should have my degree completed in a couple weeks if life doesn't get in the way.

Thanks again SOLDAT. Looks like I'll be taking the EC English Comp. I heard back from my advisor who reports the Clep will count for only 3 for me.
Like you, I don't care about GPA's either. I'm just trying to pull a life time of courses here and there together along with exams and complete my degree as soon as possible.
Again, I appreciate your taking time to respond and I'm grateful for your insight.
